Mets GM denies team's rebuilding as Max Scherzer trade to Rangers becomes official

The Texas Rangers and New York Mets officially completed the Max Scherzer trade on Sunday.

The Rangers acquired the three-time Cy Young Award winner and cash considerations in exchange for utility man Luisangel Acuna. Both teams announced the deal after it was initially reported Saturday night.

While the move is head-scratching on paper as the Mets entered Sunday seven games out of the final wild-card spot in the National League with many games left to play, New York general manager Billy Eppler denied the organization was rebuilding.

"Given the place we're in and the odds we're facing, it was a strategic decision, and we kind of took this opportunity to kind of serve another goal of the organization, which is to enhance the farm system," Eppler said before Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals, per SNY.

"But I do want to be clear that it's not a rebuild, it's not a fire sale, it's not a liquidation. This is just a repurposing of [owner Steve Cohen's] investment in the club and kind of shifting that investment from the team into the organization."

ANGELS' TAYLOR WARD STRUCK IN HEAD BY PITCH FROM BLUE JAYS' ALEK MANOAH, TAKEN TO HOSPITAL: 'TERRIBLE MOMENT'

Acuna was among the best prospects in the Rangers’ system. He was hitting .315 with seven home runs at Double-A Frisco before the trade. Eppler lauded his versatility in the news conference.

Acuna will start in Double-A Binghamton.

The Mets signed Scherzer before the start of the 2022 season. He was 20-9 with a 3.02 ERA and 294 strikeouts in 42 starts for the Mets during his stint.

He made his last start on Friday – a win over the Nationals behind his seven strikeouts in seven innings. He could make his first appearance for the Rangers by Wednesday.

Texas entered Sunday with a one-game lead on the Houston Astros in the American League West.

Los Angeles sheriff’s recruit dies months after being struck by wrong-way driver

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s recruit has died months after a wrong-way driver plowed his SUV into a group of police recruits, authorities said Friday.

Alejandro Martinez "fought for his life for the past eight months," the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

"Surrounded by his family, friends, Sheriff Luna, and other department members in support of his family, Alejandro has now gone to his eternal resting place," the statement said. "Tragically, he was not able to fulfill his calling of helping others."

About 75 recruits from Sheriff's Academy Class 464 had been running near the intersection of Mills Avenue and Telegraph Road in Whittier, just before 6:30 a.m. in November, when the SUV veered into them, authorities have said. Twenty-five cadets were injured.

The SUV driver had been identified as 22-year-old Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez from suburban Diamond Bar, who suffered a minor injury.

He was initially arrested, but authorities later released him on grounds that more investigation was needed.

Cardinals’ Miles Mikolas suspended five games for intentionally throwing at Cubs’ Ian Happ

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas was suspended for five games on Friday and fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing at Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ Thursday night, Major League Baseball’s Senior Vice President for On-Field Operations Michael Hill announced.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol received a one-game suspension and a fine due to Mikolas’ actions and missed Friday night’s game against Chicago.

Mikolas is appealing his suspension and will be held in abeyance until the appeals process is complete.

Thursday night, Mikolas plunked Happ in the back during the first inning after one of Happ’s swings hit catcher Willson Contreras in the back of the helmet.

Contreras, who was bleeding from the head, left the game after being checked out. Happ and Contreras hugged it out, and it did not appear there were any hard feelings.

Happ then threw up and in on Happ before plunking him on the next pitch.

The umpires convened before throwing Mikolas out of the game.

"I wish if they thought there was intent behind the first [pitch], then issue a warning after the first one," Marmol said, per MLB.com. "Then, that [warning] kills everything that happened yesterday – rather than waiting around [for the second pitch that hit Happ] and then going straight to an ejection. Once they say it’s intentional, he gets suspended, and I get suspended."

The Cardinals went on to lose Mikolas’ start 10-3 and also lost to Chicago Friday night at Busch Stadium.

Cubs outfielder Mike Tauchman robbed Cardinals pinch-hitter Alec Burleson of a walk-off home run Friday night in the second game of a four-game series.

Mikolas is 6-6 on the year with a 4.38 ERA.

Black university lecturer refuses to subject daughter to ‘Barbie’ over ‘White is always right’ ideology

A University of Baltimore lecturer said he refuses to take his young daughter to see the new "Barbie" movie because she "already receives enough unintentional whiteness."

On Thursday, Dwight Watkins, who also acts as Editor at Large for Salon.com, penned a commentary on the liberal news and opinion website explaining why he would not subject himself or his child to the new film starring Margot Robbie.

After his three-year-old gleefully expressed interest in seeing the movie, Watkins sat down with his computer to watch the "Barbie" official trailer. After clicking play, he recalled being "overwhelmed with whiteness."

"Barbie, which does have a few nonwhite cast members, including Issa Rae, America Ferrera, and Ncuti Gatwa, has one of the whitest trailers I ever saw in my life," he continued. "And no, I'm not that guy; I genuinely believe that artists and filmmakers can create whatever they want, but I must be cautious of what I expose my daughter to."

BARBIE'S DREAMHOUSE MUST BE 'REDESIGNED TO SURVIVE' CLIMATE CHANGE, CBS REPORTS

Concerned about his daughter's inability to comprehend the complexities of gender at such a young age, Watkins wondered how he could even begin to engage with her in a discussion about race and "how movies and commercials in America act like White people have a monopoly on beauty?"

"Google' attractive woman' and watch the page fill up with White faces," he added.

Anticipating the potential for a rebuttal to his train of thought, Watkins stressed that he is not teaching his daughter to engage with Black art exclusively. It's just that White is "always available" and "at the forefront of everything."

BARBIE BOMBSHELL: ORIGIN OF AMERICA’S FAVORITE DOLL DISPUTED BY MISSILE DEFENSE DESIGNER’S DAUGHTER

"I never heard a White person say, 'The representation was poor; I just don't see myself in the art,' yet Black people and people of color deal with this daily. America intentionally and unintentionally shoves whiteness down our throats every day, every minute, every second, and there's not much we can do about it, other than thoughtfully curating a child's experience," Watkins said.

Watkins concluded that while he can do everything to protect his daughter from the "White is always right" ideology, he still may not be able to keep her from "that way of thinking" because America, he claimed, is "so fixed on that message."

"…That doesn't exempt me from religiously teaching her that Black is beautiful, even though Hollywood is only willing to show it in small doses," he added. "Avoiding films like 'Barbie' is a part of that teaching."

‘BARBIE’ CONTROVERSY: MARGOT ROBBIE AND RYAN GOSLING FILM’S ROCKY ROAD TO THEATERS

Despite the author's serious quandaries with the new movie, many liberal Hollywood critics have praised "Barbie" for its diverse cast and strong feminist message.

"The Barbie movie finds all the fun in laughing at the men's rights movement," Polygon announced. "It's a takedown of toxic masculinity tied up with a pretty pink wrapper."

TheWrap also stated that the movie "delivers a fierce feminist statement dressed in pink," while The Globe and Mail declared the film "the most captivating and unwaveringly feminist summer blockbuster ever to exist."

The film has already grossed nearly $600 million worldwide and has earned over $287,402,000 in the United States alone.

Suspected Texas vehicle thief dies in shootout with vehicle owner who tracked him down, police say

A suspected vehicle thief has died in a mall parking lot gunfight in Texas after the owner of the truck he allegedly stole managed to track him down, police say.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told reporters that the shooting happened outside the South Park Mall on Thursday just two minutes after officers received a call about the theft.

"The owner of the stolen vehicle certainly has the right to track down their vehicle," he said. "Now, we would prefer that they called the police before taking that into their own hands, but he did what he felt he needed to do."

McManus said the incident unfolded when the owner of the stolen vehicle – who was with a female companion – first tracked it down to the mall’s parking lot.

UNACCOMPANIED HONDURAN GIRL, 5, FOUND IN TEXAS DAYS AFTER MOTHER DIED, AUTHORITIES SAY

"They show up, they find the vehicle, there is two individuals – a male and a female – in the vehicle," the police chief said. "The owner of the stolen vehicle gets the driver ... and the passenger out of the truck at gunpoint."

Manus said the owner or the person he was with then notified police

"The suspect in the stolen vehicle was seated by the rear tire of the vehicle. So at some point, the person who stole the vehicle and who is now being held at gunpoint by the owner of the vehicle produces a weapon from his waistband and shoots the owner of the vehicle," he continued.

The vehicle owner then returned fire, striking the alleged thief and leaving him "deceased in the parking lot," according to McManus.

GUNMAN OPENS FIRE AT DALLAS-AREA MEDICAL BUILDING, INJURING DOCTOR

The female passenger with the alleged thief also was struck by gunfire and is in critical condition at a local hospital, he said.

The driver, meanwhile, is reported to be in stable condition and has received medical treatment as well.

The identities of those involved were not immediately released by police.

"He was trying to recover his property," McManus said, describing the vehicle as a Ford truck. "I guess it would depend on who you ask, whether he did the right thing or not."

A man identified by KENS 5 as being the brother of the victim told that station, "There are two sides to every story.

"Whether my brother was wrong or right, he had a gun pointed at him. I guess he took it upon himself to defend himself. The guy who shot him is a vigilante, not a hero," Jose Garcia told KENS 5. "A vehicle is not worth taking someone's life, I don't care what kind of car it is. You don’t take the law into your own hands. Now my mom, my family, we all have to suffer and just deal with it."

Nigerian president reveals Cabinet nominees 2 months after taking office

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu on Thursday forwarded 28 ministerial nominees to federal legislators for confirmation as he seeks to finally set up his Cabinet to lead Africa's most populous country.

The long-awaited list featuring six women was presented to the Nigerian Senate by Tinubu’s chief of staff Femi Gbajabiamila, a day before the deadline and nearly two months after the Nigerian leader took office.

On the list with no assigned portfolios are four former governors and three presidential aides. It also features prominent professionals such as Muhammed Ali Pate, a former Nigerian health minister and former director at the World Bank who recently turned down an appointment to lead the global vaccine alliance Gavi.

NIGERIAN PRESIDENT REPLACES ALL SECURITY CHIEFS IN MAJOR SHAKEUP

Tinubu on May 29 took the reins of Africa’s largest economy, a nation of more than 210 million people, after promising to build on the achievements of his successor and end chronic bad governance that has stifled development.

In addition to his pledge to end the deadly violence in the hard-hit northern region, the 71-year-old also promised to revive the economy, which has been struggling with surging inflation, high debt and job losses since the pandemic. But he has had a rough start in office with continued extrajudicial killings and economic hardship worsened by some of his policies. These include putting an end to gas subsidies that have been in place for decades but without social welfare programs in place to cushion the effect.

The list of ministerial nominees included several party loyalists who helped mobilize support for Tinubu during his presidential campaign.

NIGERIA'S TINUBU SWORN IN AS PRESIDENT AMID SOCIAL, POLITICAL TURMOIL

Idayat Hassan, who leads the West Africa-focused Center for Democracy and Development, said the Nigerian president should discontinue the long tradition of rewarding loyalists with ministerial positions. "He must ensure that their appointments are fit to what their expertise really is," Hassan said.

She also urged the president to focus on Nigeria’s most pressing challenges in the security and economic sectors. "There can’t be prosperity without peace and stability, so prioritizing security and the economy should go hand in hand," Hassan said.

The date for the confirmation of the ministerial nominees has not been set by legislators. The process usually takes a few days and the current nominees are expected to be confirmed, because Tinubu's party has a majority in the Senate.

‘Smoking-gun documents’ prove Facebook censored Americans on behalf of White House, Jim Jordan says

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on Thursday shared what he called "smoking-gun documents" proving Facebook censored Americans on behalf of the Biden administration in a lengthy social media thread.

Jordan wrote the all-caps message, "THE FACEBOOK FILES, PART 1: SMOKING-GUN DOCS PROVE FACEBOOK CENSORED AMERICANS BECAUSE OF BIDEN WHITE HOUSE PRESSURE," before diving into the lengthy thread reminiscent of the so-called "Twitter Files" used earlier this year to disclose once-internal documents given to journalists once Elon Musk bought the social media platform.

"Never-before-released internal documents subpoenaed by the Judiciary Committee PROVE that Facebook and Instagram censored posts and changed their content moderation policies because of unconstitutional pressure from the Biden White House," Jordan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"During the first half of 2021, social media companies like Facebook faced tremendous pressure from the Biden White House—both publicly and privately—to crack down on alleged ‘misinformation,’" he continued. "In April 2021, a Facebook employee circulated an email for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg, writing: ‘We are facing continued pressure from external stakeholders, including the [Biden] White House’ to remove posts."

'FACEBOOK RECEIPTS' PROJECT AIMS TO REVEAL META'S ABILITY TO INFLUENCE CONGRESS THROUGH HIGH-POWERED LOBBYISTS

Jordan then wrote that an April 2021 email revealed that a Facebook executive informed his team that a Biden administration senior advisor was "outraged" that Facebook did not remove a particular post. The post, according to Jordan, was a meme of actor Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at a TV with the caption, "10 years from now you will be watching TV and hear… Did you or a loved one take the COVID vaccine? You may be entitled to…"

AOC SAYS FACEBOOK 'SHOULD BE BROKEN UP,' 'SUBJECT TO ANTITRUST ACTIVITY'

Facebook noted that "removing content like that would represent a significant incursion into traditional boundaries of free expression in the US," but Andy Slavitt, the Biden senior advisor who was worked up over the meme, "disregarded the warning and the First Amendment," according to Jordan.

"What happened next? Facebook panicked," Jordan wrote. "In another April 2021 email, Brian Rice, Facebook’s VP of public policy, raised the concern that Slavitt's challenge felt ‘very much like a crossroads for us with the [Biden] White House in these early days.’"

Jordan noted that "Facebook wanted to repair its relationship with the White House to avoid adverse action," and provided a document in which someone who appears to be a Facebook staffer wrote, "Given what is at stake here, it would also be a good idea if we could regroup and take stock of where we are in our relations with the [White House], and our internal methods too," in an internal document.

"This wasn’t the first time that the Biden White House was angry that Facebook didn’t censor more," Jordan wrote before listing other examples.

"In July 2021, President Biden publicly denounced Facebook and other social media platforms, claiming they were ‘killing people’ by not censoring alleged ‘misinformation,’" Jordan wrote. "On August 2, 2021, Facebook admitted it was going to change its policies because of pressure from the Biden White House."

BIG TECH BACKLASH: APPLE, GOOGLE, FACEBOOK, AMAZON CEOS GRILLED ON CAPITOL HILL

Jordan then wrote that "it wasn't just the White House," because "Facebook also changed its policies in direct response to pressure from Biden's Surgeon General, censoring members of the ‘disinformation dozen'" for sharing claims about COVID.

"These documents, AND OTHERS that were just produced to the Committee, prove that the Biden Admin abused its powers to coerce Facebook into censoring Americans, preventing free and open discourse on issues of critical public importance," Jordan wrote.

TOP BIDEN OFFICIAL RAISES EYEBROWS BY 'LOBBYING' FORMER AGENCY AFTER LEAVING GOVERNMENT, WATCHDOG SAYS

"Only after the Committee announced its intention to hold Mark Zuckerberg in contempt did Facebook produce ANY internal documents to the Committee, including these documents, which PROVE that government pressure was directly responsible for censorship on Facebook," he continued. "Based on Facebook’s newfound commitment to fully cooperate with the Committee’s investigation, the Committee has decided to hold contempt in abeyance. For now. To be clear, contempt is still on the table and WILL be used if Facebook fails to cooperate in FULL."

Jordan ended his thread with, "To be continued…"

Facebook and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Russian helicopter crashes in Siberia, killing 4 people on board and injuring 10

A helicopter crashed in the Siberia region of Russia on Thursday, killing four of the people on board and injuring 10, Russian emergency officials reported.

The Mi-8 helicopter caught fire as it was landing in southern Siberia's Altai Republic and brushed against a power line, the Altai branch of the Russian Emergency Ministry said. It released a photo showing the chopper’s wreckage.

The branch's initial statement said the helicopter carried 13 people and six were killed and seven were injured. Officials revised the numbers later in the day, saying a total of 16 people were on board and four died.

It turned out two people who were believed dead had left the crash site on their own and went to the nearest hospital, an updated statement said.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the country's civilian aviation regulator Rosaviatsia, that the helicopter belonged to a private company and was carrying a group of tourists.

The Mi-8 is a two-engine helicopter designed in the 1960s. It is used in Russia, where crashes have been frequent, as well as in neighboring countries and many other nations.

Hunter Biden pleads 'not guilty' as plea deal falls apart during Delaware court appearance

Hunter Biden's plea deal fell apart during his first court appearance Wednesday morning and pleaded "not guilty" as federal prosecutors confirmed the president's son is still under federal investigation.

The president's son was expected to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax, as part of plea deal to avoid jail time on a felony gun charge.

HUNTER BIDEN AGREES TO PLEAD GUILTY TO FEDERAL TAX CHARGES

But Judge Maryellen Noreika did not accept the plea agreement, questioning the constitutionality--specifically the diversion clause and the immunity Hunter Biden would receive.

Hunter Biden was also expected to enter into a pretrial diversion agreement regarding a separate felony charge of possession of a firearm by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.

BIDENS ALLEGEDLY 'COERCED' BURISMA CEO TO PAY THEM MILLIONS TO HELP GET UKRAINE PROSECUTOR FIRED: FBI FORM

The judge pressed federal prosecutors on the investigation and questioned whether there was the possibility for future charges, and asked prosecutors if Hunter Biden was currently under active investigation. Prosecutors said he was, but would not answer specifically what the president's son is under investigation for.

Prosecutors on Wednesday, though, said Hunter Biden pleading guilty to the two misdemeanor tax offenses would not immunize him from future charges.

EXCLUSIVE: JOE BIDEN ALLEGEDLY PAID $5M BY BURISMA EXECUTIVE AS PART OF A BRIBERY SCHEME, ACCORDING TO FBI DOCUMENT

At one point, Noreika asked Justice Department prosecutor Leo Wise whether there is an "ongoing investigation here."

"There is," Wise said, adding that he could not tell the judge what the investigation was.

Noreika asked if the government could potentially bring a charge related to the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), to which Wise replied: "Yes."

At that point, the original plea deal broke down. Defense attorney Chris Clark said he did not agree with that.

"Then there’s no deal," Wise said.

Clark countered, "As far as I’m concerned the plea deal is null and void."

After that, both sides asked the judge for time to negotiate. Noreika left the courtroom for 20 minutes or so and allowed both sides to continue negotiations.

Ultimately, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty because Noreika could not accept the plea deal as it was constructed. She repeatedly expressed her concerns about the constitutionality of the diversion deal related to the felony gun charge, specifying that the main issue with the agreement was that if Hunter breached the deal, the judge would need to make a finding of fact on the matter before the government could bring charges.

Judge Noreika said she saw that as being "outside of my lane," noting that if the diversion agreement might be unconstitutional, then the entire plea deal would be unconstitutional, meaning that Hunter Biden would not be getting the immunity he thought.

DOJ OFFERS HUNTER BIDEN INVESTIGATOR FOR TESTIMONY BEFORE THE HOUSE

The diversion was an agreement in which the government would not charge Hunter Biden with the more serious federal gun charge—if he pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor tax charges—and behaved under certain terms of the agreement for a period of approximately 24 months. If Hunter Biden breached the diversion, the government would try to bring the serious gun charge against him.

At that point, the government would bring that information to the judge, and the judge would be required to determine whether charges should be brought—that was the portion of the diversion which Noreika rejected, saying that would be unconstitutional, as charging decisions are made by the executive branch, not the judicial branch.

Meanwhile, the judge apologized to Hunter Biden near the end of the hearing.

"Mr. Biden, I know you want to get this over with, and I’m sorry," Noreika said. "But I need to get more information to do Justice as I’m required to do."

The judge asked for briefings from both sides, but did not set a firm date.

Noreika questioned Hunter Biden on his sobriety, and on his business dealings--specifically money that he received from foreign business partners, like Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings and his joint-venture with Chinese energy firm CEFC.

As Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre delivered a statement at the beginning of the daily briefing.

"Hunter Biden is a private citizen, and this was a personal matter for him. As we have said, the president, the first lady, they love their son and they support him as he continues to rebuild his life," Jean-Pierre said. "This case was handled independently, as all of you know, by the Justice Department under the leadership of a prosecutor appointed by the former president, President Trump."

DOJ OFFERS HUNTER BIDEN INVESTIGATOR FOR TESTIMONY BEFORE THE HOUSE

She added: "So for anything further, as you know, and we've been very consistent from here, I'd refer you to the Department of Justice and to Hunter's representatives who is his legal team, obviously, who can address any of your questions."

The developments in the case Wednesday come after IRS whistleblower testimony revealed allegations of DOJ misconduct throughout the years-long investigation into the president's son. IRS whistelblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler said politics influenced prosecutorial decisions throughout the investigation.

House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith filed an amicus brief to the court, requesting that testimony be considered ahead of accepting the planned plea deal, saying Hunter Biden "appears to have benefited from political interference which calls into question the propriety of the investigation of the U.S. Attorney’s Office."

FLASHBACK: EMAILS TO HUNTER BIDEN SHOW PLANS TO MEET WITH STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS ABOUT BURISMA PROBE, NOT WANTING TO REGISTER UNDER FARA

"In the interest of full transparency and fairness for all citizens, it is critical for the Court to have this relevant information when evaluating the Plea Agreement," Smith wrote in the brief.

Meanwhile, on the eve of the court appearance, the judge threatened to sanction Hunter Biden's legal team after one of his attorneys allegedly lied about who she was while asking to remove IRS whistleblower testimony from the court docket.

The defense, though, denied the allegations and called the incident "an unfortunate and unintentional miscommunication."

Fox News' Griff Jenkins and Alexandra Rego contributed to this report.

Ex-NYPD commissioner pardoned by Trump agrees to deal with Special Counsel Jack Smith in 2020 election probe

The legal team for former NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik secured a deal with Special Counsel Jack Smith to hand over thousands of documents related to the investigation into former President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, Fox News Digital confirmed through Kerik's lawyer.

Kerik’s attorney, Timothy Parlatore, was quoted by The Daily Beast and CNN Monday as having agreed to turn over nearly 2,000 pages of material describing how Kerik investigated allegations of voter fraud.  Reached by Fox News Digital Tuesday, Parlatore said he turned over to Smith's office 600 megabytes of material, the vast majority of which were PDFs.

"I think it's probably a lot more than 2000 pages," he said.

Kerik’s legal team had initially refused to turn over the documents to the House select committee probing the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. They had cited attorney-client privilege, given that Kerik worked with Trump’s attorney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani on the probe.

GEORGIA GOV. BRIAN KEMP CONTACTED BY SPECIAL COUNSEL JACK SMITH REGARDING DONALD TRUMP 2020 ELECTION PROBE

Parlatore said Kerik had agreed to turn over the documents to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign for review in recent weeks, and the campaign waived the attorney-client privilege on Friday, ultimately allowing Kerik’s team to turn over the documents to Smith’s office on Sunday.

"From the time he received a subpoena from the January 6 Committee, Mr. Kerik has believed that full disclosure is the best policy so that the public can understand how extensive the legal team’s efforts to investigate election fraud were," Parlatore told The Daily Beast.

STEFANIK: 'NOT A COINCIDENCE' JACK SMITH TARGETS TRUMP SAME WEEK AS IRS WHISTLEBLOWER HEARING ON HUNTER BIDEN

Kerik’s attorney noted that the documents could include exculpatory evidence for Trump, suggesting the former president’s investigators acted in good faith.

Parlatore told Fox News Digital he recently convinced the Trump campaign that "full disclosure is the best defense here, because the reality is whether there was or was not fraud, the fact that they were actively investigating it in good faith, which these documents demonstrate is exculpatory. It is the defense to any case by Jack Smith."

"I'm not contesting legitimacy of the election, but from the perspective of a criminal lawyer who asking should Jack Smith indict somebody the answer is no, because this proves that they were investigating fraud at the time," Parlatore told Fox News Digital. "Even if you look at the CNN article where it says, you know, this stuff was all into ‘debunked claims.’ So assuming for a second that that is true, that they've actually been debunked as opposed to just the narrative that everybody's been told to say that they're all debunked, they weren't debunked on the night of Jan. 5."

Parlatore said that he and Kerik are scheduled to sit down for an interview with federal investigators some time in the next two weeks regarding the documents.

Last week, Trump announced that he received a letter from Smith notifying him that he was the subject of a Jan. 6 grand jury investigation, suggesting the former president could soon be indicted. Trump had similarly reported receiving a letter ahead of his federal indictment in connection to classified documents found during an FBI search of Mar-a-Lago.

"Rushing to an indictment before you've concluded your investigation to figure out whether a crime has actually been committed is completely imbecilic and runs counter to all the principles of justice," Parlatore told Fox News Digital Tuesday, referencing Smith's probe. "So I think that if he were to indict before interviewing this next set of witnesses, the Trump campaign will likely seize upon the timing as evidence that this is motivated by politics as opposed to justice."

Newsweek noted that Kerik, who served as the NYPD commissioner from 2000 to 2001, pleaded guilty in 2009 to felony charges of tax fraud and making false statements to the government. He spent about three years in prison before transitioning to home confinement and eventually supervised release. Trump pardoned Kerik for his past convictions in early 2020.

Overloaded passenger boat capsizes off Indonesia's Sulawesi Island, claiming 15 lives

An overloaded passenger boat capsized off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, killing 15 people, rescuers said Monday. Authorities said that the 33 other passengers survived.

The vessel was traveling from Lanto village in Buton Central regency in Southeast Sulawesi province to nearby Lagili village when it capsized just after midnight on Monday, local search and rescue agency head Muhammad Arafah said.

The wooden boat was designed to carry 20 people.

A search and rescue team initially found 15 bodies and rescued six people, and had continued their search for the others. But the operation was later called off when officials determined that all on board had been accounted for.

"There were 27 people who survived, but had not previously been reported, because they went straight home," local search and rescue agency head Muhammad Arafah said in a statement.

THE 1975 BANNED FROM PERFORMING IN MALAYSIA, FESTIVAL CANCELED AFTER MATTY HEALY SAME-SEX KISS WITH BANDMATE

Three inflatable boats, two fishing boats and six divers were deployed while the search was underway.

Thousands of residents had traveled to their villages to celebrate the regency's ninth anniversary on Sunday, and many people were transported by fishing or passenger boats.

Television news showed footage of people on fishing boats retrieving bodies in the overnight darkness, and grieving relatives waiting for information at a port and a local hospital.

Indonesia is an archipelago with more than 17,000 islands, and ferries and boats are a common form of transportation. With lax safety standards and problems with overcrowding, accidents occur frequently.

In 2018, an overcrowded ferry with about 200 people on board sank in a lake in North Sumatra province, killing 167 people.

In one of the country’s worst recorded disasters, an overcrowded passenger ship sank in February 1999 with 332 people aboard. Only 20 people survived.

CNN panelist calls out VP Harris over 'completely made up' Florida slavery curriculum claim

CNN political commentator Scott Jennings called out Vice President Harris on Sunday over her claim that Florida's middle school curriculum included lessons on how enslaved people "benefited from slavery."

CNN "State of the Union" host Dana Bash asked the panelists about how Democrats have been calling for Harris to "get out there more."

"What is amazing to me that, how little Kamala Harris apparently has to do, that she can read something on Twitter one day and be on the airplane the next to make something literally out of nothing. This is a completely made-up deal. I looked at the standards, I even looked at an analysis of the standards, in every instance where the word slavery or slave was used, I even read the statement of the African American scholars that wrote the standards. Not Ron DeSantis, but the scholars," he said.

"Everybody involved in this says this is completely a fabricated issue and yet look at how quickly Kamala Harris jumped on it. So the fact that this is her best moment, a fabricated matter, is pretty ridiculous," Jennings continued.

DESANTIS LETS LOOSE ON FLORIDA ‘OBSESSED’ KAMALA HARRIS SPEECH RIPPING STATE'S BLACK HISTORY STANDARD

Harris delivered remarks in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday.

"Just yesterday in the state of Florida they decided middle school students will be taught that enslaved people benefited from slavery. They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us, and we will not stand for it," Harris said, referencing new curriculum approved by the Florida Department of Education on Wednesday that includes the history of slavery in the U.S.

The new curriculum states, "Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit."

Karen Finney, a CNN political commentator, praised Harris' remarks, calling it a "stellar moment."

KAMALA HARRIS RIDICULED FOR ‘NONSENSE’ COMMENTS AT TRANSPORTATION ROUNDTABLE: ‘SHE CAN’T BE SERIOUS'

"It was a stellar moment and I think she did something that she has done often in the last couple of years which is in a moment when something needed to be said, she got out there and said it. And really channeled what people were feeling. I mean, the idea that we would literally have a conversation — I have to laugh it is so disgusting that there were personal benefits of any kind to slaves. It is like saying women, we’re happy when we couldn’t vote, and we couldn’t have our own banking accounts. It is just ridiculous," Finney said.

Ashley Allison, another panelist and CNN commentator, reacted to Harris' remarks and responded to Jennings.

"I’m glad she spoke on the issue. "Just because Black people write it, doesn’t mean it's going to be accurate. We can disagree with Black people as well. I think what the bigger picture is that this is happening in Florida. This is happening in a Florida where you have a governor who has an anti-woke bill, who has a ‘don’t say gay’ bill, who wants to ban DEI programs, who wants to ban Rosa Parks," she said.

"I think at this panel we could all agree that slaves did not benefit from slavery. Even if the citation said, well they might have gotten — they didn’t have a choice, so that is not a benefit. Slaves did not have the freedom to choose, like Ron DeSantis said, maybe they could have become a blacksmith. Not when they didn't have the choice to become a blacksmith. And so that was what Kamala Harris was saying. And I hope in this moment when we have such a contentious political environment that we could all agree that slavery was not a good thing and slaves did not benefit. And then we could move on. But the problem is, the governor who is the second in the polls for the Republican nomination won’t do that," Allison continued.

'Haunted' rocking horse that reportedly moved from room to room on its own is going up for sale

A "haunted" rocking horse that is said to have moved itself from room to room over the years is going up for sale.

The great-granddaughter of a medium named Dick Godden, who is said to have used it to help summon spirits, is selling the early 20th century wooden toy.

The owner, "Kelly," who did not want her full name used, said she cannot sell the rocking horse without warning potential buyers about its paranormal past, SWNS, the British news service, reported.

TRUCKER RECORDS CREEPY GHOST-LIKE FIGURE ON ARIZONA HIGHWAY WHILE DRIVING ALONE: DASHCAM VIDEO

The gray dappled pony, she said, has been passed down through generations of her family — but her 10-year-old daughter isn’t eager to ride it or play with it.

The mother recalled her own great-grandmother telling stories to others of leaving the house with the rocking horse on the landing — yet returning to find it in a completely different room, though no one else was inside at the time.

Spiritualism ran in the family, said the woman — who also said her mother took her to her first séance "at just 15 years old."

Now a holistic therapist in Ashford, Kent, in the U.K., the woman said she's since renounced spiritualism and found Christianity.

It is her new faith, she said, that's prompted her to remove the spooky pony from her home.

She said that while the horse has not moved from her landing lately, she often hears banging noises upstairs while she's working.

Her great-grandfather Godden apparently held séances at his home and believed a young girl named Angela was playing on the toy horse — after he reportedly "raised" the girl's spirit and she admitted to rocking on it.

Recounting her supernatural upbringing, the woman said, "One day my great-grandma Irene came home to an empty house and the horse had been moved into the middle of the living room."

She added, "She assumed one of my cousins had been playing on it, as they used to let themselves in to [take] a shower after being to the beach, as they often did, but no wet towels were hanging in the usual place."

It turned out that the cousins hadn’t been near the house at the time, she said.

She also told SWNS, "I remember going from our home in Hampshire to visit my great-grandparents when I was about seven. It was a three-story house and the top bedrooms always felt quite eerie."

TEXAS MAN CLAIMS LITTLE BOY'S GHOST PUSHED SHOPPING CART INTO HIS $25K CAR, CAUSING DAMAGE

She recalled "feeling uneasy going up and down the steep narrow staircase on my own to the top floor where the horse was kept," she said.

She'd had the rocking horse ever since her own daughter was an infant, she said — but as her child grew, she was "never drawn to it or interested in playing on it."

She said, "I’ve never seen the rocking horse move rooms." It stays on the landing, she said, but "there would often be the sound of someone walking around upstairs."

She noted, "On more than one occasion, I would hear a huge bang from one of the rooms upstairs. Thinking it was something falling off a window sill, I would rush up there and absolutely nothing would be out of place. It did make me wonder."

The woman said she's eager to flag the horse’s past to potential buyers.

OWNER OF 'ONE OF THE MOST HAUNTED HOUSES' DETAILS THE UNSETTLING DISCOVERIES MADE ON THE PROPERTY

She said, "I really feel that whoever bids on it should know, even though I realize that might put some people off."

The woman's great-grandfather Godden was reportedly a well-known paranormal investigator in Folkestone, SWNS said.

During the early 1970s he investigated a frequently sighted apparition at a local theater. A boy was believed to have been killed in the theater by an extractor fan that fell from the roof in 1945.

Godden's Kent investigation features in "Phantom Ladies," a published collection of supernatural stories across Great Britain written by Andrew Green, who pioneered the application of scientific methods to ghost hunting, SWNS noted.

The rocking horse that's for sale is expected to fetch £200 to £300, or roughly $257 to $386 in U.S. dollars, at auction on July 30.

Along with the dimensions and cursory description, the lot summary from Canterbury Auction Galleries reads: "Note: The vendor's [great] grandfather was a trance medium/ghost hunter in the 1940s, and the horse was used for séances."

A spokesperson for the auctioneer's house said, "The supernatural element of this item has not determined the estimates put on it."

The item is listed along with many other lots on the auction house's website

Ohio man, 36, dies after jumping off cliff at Lake Powell in Utah

The body of an Ohio man was recovered from Lake Powell in Utah on Friday after he failed to resurface from a cliff jump, officials said.

The incident happened around 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Buoy 89 on Lake Powell within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the National Park Service (NPS) said in a news release.

The victim, identified as 36-year-old Cory Ryan Ehrnschwender from Cincinnati, had jumped from a height of about 50 feet into the lake but failed to resurface, witnesses told officials.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area rangers and officers from the Utah Department of Natural Resources and Kane County Sheriff’s Office conducted an initial search for Ehrnschwender but were unsuccessful.

Hunter Biden's 'sugar brother' lawyer spotted smoking bong on home balcony during visit from president's son

Kevin Morris, an attorney and adviser for Hunter Biden, was spotted Thursday smoking a bong on the balcony of his Malibu, California, home while the president's son was visiting.

Morris appeared to be puffing on the white bong in plain view of the public street outside the home. Hunter Biden was at the Malibu home at the time of the bong rip but was not present on the balcony when the photos were snapped, according to photos obtained by Fox News Digital.

It's unclear what substance Morris appeared to be smoking, but recreational marijuana is legal in California.

Hunter's visit to Morris' house, which was first reported by Daily Mail, comes as the House Oversight Committee's investigation into the Biden family finances took a sharp turn this week with the Thursday release of an FBI document detailing how he, along with his dad, President Biden, allegedly "coerced" Burisma CEO Mykola Zlochevsky to pay them millions of dollars in exchange for their help in getting the Ukrainian prosecutor investigating the company fired.

HUNTER BIDEN'S ‘SUGAR BROTHER’ KEEPS THE FIRST SON AFLOAT AMID MULTIPLE SCANDALS

Morris, a prominent Hollywood attorney, has assumed an increasingly big role in Biden's life, to the point that the wealthy lawyer has been dubbed Hunter's "sugar brother." That role has involved a wide range of areas – from financial support, to helping write a book, to lending a private jet.

Indeed, Biden, 53, flew to and from the Arkansas courthouse for his May child-support hearing aboard a luxury private jet owned by Morris, according to the New York Post, which cited flight and business records.

The jet took off from Los Angeles on April 30 just after 7 a.m., flew cross-country to Washington, D.C., where it landed, and then went to Arkansas for the hearing the next morning. Afterward, the jet left around 11:30 a.m. to return to D.C. The 7,326-mile round trip likely cost between $55,000 to $117,000, the Post reported, noting the total was the equivalent value of up to six months of Biden's child-support payments.

Beyond the child-support hearing, the Post cited flight records showing Morris' plane landing in or taking off from Fayetteville, Arkansas, at least nine times between February 2022 and April 2023. Fayetteville is the home of Biden's financial adviser, Edward Prewitt.

BIDENS ALLEGEDLY 'COERCED' BURISMA CEO TO PAY THEM MILLIONS TO HELP GET UKRAINE PROSECUTOR FIRED: FBI FORM

Morris has helped Biden maintain his allegedly lavish lifestyle, according to several reports, covering at least some of the first son's rent and living expenses.

Perhaps most famously, Morris loaned more than $2 million to Biden to help pay off the first son's overdue taxes, which are in part the subject of a years-long Justice Department investigation into possible tax evasion and other potential crimes.

Morris has additionally advised Biden on a host of legal, personal and financial matters, ranging from his child-support lawsuit to how to respond to ongoing federal probes in his taxes and business affairs. Biden lawyer Chris Clark told CBS News last year that Morris is serving as an "attorney and trusted adviser" to the first son.

Emails and business records indicate Morris also controls Biden's valuable assets. Indeed, Biden's stake in a Chinese private equity firm called BHR is now controlled by Morris, the Washington Free Beacon recently reported. Specifically, Morris controls Skaneateles, which holds Biden's 10% stake in BHR.

An amended joint venture contract for BHR Partners first obtained by the nonprofit investigative group Marco Polo, identifies Morris as the managing member of Biden's LLC. BHR Partners is co-owned by the Beijing-controlled Bank of China and manages $2.1 billion in assets.

Biden initially invested $420,000 in BHR Partners in October 2017 through his personal company, Skaneateles LLC. His interest in the company spiked to an estimated $894,000, according to a March 2019 email from his former business partner, Eric Schwerin.

Additionally, amid the ongoing investigations into Hunter Biden's business dealings, Morris assisted him in finishing his 2021 memoir, "Beautiful Things," which chronicled his drug and alcohol addictions. Biden included Morris – who reportedly found a high-powered literary agent for the first son – as part of "the outstanding team behind this book" on the acknowledgments page of his memoir.

Morris has also worked on a documentary project that's expected to build on the memoir's story of redemption while portraying Biden as the victim of attacks from conservatives and Republicans in recent years.

Morris allegedly lied to get on to the film set of "My Son Hunter," an independent movie that presents a fictionalized and unflattering account of Biden's drug use and foreign business dealings. According to several reports, Morris flew to Serbia with two colleagues, identified himself by name to the film crew, and said he was making a documentary about Biden's alleged "corruption" without revealing their relationship. Morris and his two colleagues were given full access to the set for several days, taping hours of footage for the supposed documentary.

However, when revelations about Morris' connection to Biden first came to light last year, Phelim McAleer, a producer of the film, called the lawyer's behavior "unethical," adding that "if I had known that he was providing legal and media consult to Hunter Biden, I would have treated him rather differently."

Morris didn't immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

Trump: Biden 'doesn't understand what he's doing' during 'most dangerous time in the history of our country'

Former President Donald Trump said in a new interview clip aired Sunday that President Biden is not up to the task during a precarious time for the U.S. amid growing tensions around the globe.

"Look, this is the most dangerous time in the history of our country because of weaponry. The nuclear power is so enormous. This isn't two Army tanks going and shooting each other in World War I, World War II, soldiers standing behind a bunker and shooting people," Trump said during a sit-down interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo.

"This is obliteration," Trump added in the interview, the second half of which aired Sunday on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures."

"And we have a man that doesn't understand what he's doing. We have a man that … stood up and told the whole world that we have no ammunition," Trump said of Biden. "Do you know I had every ammunition building full to the brim three years ago. We've given it all away. But if you gave it all away – terrible. The only thing worse than that is to tell the world. … He has told China and these other places that are hostile that we have no ammunition."

BIDEN LETS AMERICAN MILITARY INFO SLIP DURING LIVE INTERVIEW, SPARKING BACKLASH

"You talk about classified documents. That's worse than any document that you could give," Trump continued, apparently in reference to the federal indictment against him with regard to classified documents found during an FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago estate last year. "So, now these people are sitting back in China and other places that hate us, including North Korea, where I had a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un and kept our country safe. They're talking about the United States of America has no ammunition. Think of it. How stupid can somebody be to say that?"

During an interview on CNN this month, Biden let slip while explaining the controversial decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine that the United States is low on 155 mm artillery ammunition rounds, sparking outrage on social media as critics called the commander in chief's competency into question.

"It was a very difficult decision on my part. And by the way, I discussed this with our allies, discussed this with our friends up on the Hill," Biden told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on July 9, ahead of the president's travel to Europe to attend the NATO conference in Lithuania. "And we're in a situation where Ukraine continues to be brutally attacked across the board by munitions, by these cluster munitions that are – have DOD rates that are very, very low, very high, that are dangerous to civilians, No. 1."

BIDEN TANGLES WITH REPORTER WHO QUESTIONS US COMMITMENT TO NATO: 'NO ONE CAN GUARANTEE THE FUTURE'

"No. 2, the Ukrainians are running out of ammunition. The ammunition that they to call them, 155 millimeter weapons," Biden said. "This is a war relating to munitions and the running out of those that ammunition. And we're low on. And so what I finally did and took the recommendation of the Defense Department to not permanently but to allow for in this transition period where we have more 155 weapons, these shells, for the Ukrainians."

A White House official walked back Biden's comment that the United States is running out of ammunition when asked to comment on criticism in response to Biden's live CNN interview.

"The military has specific requirements for the numbers of weapons systems and ammunition we maintain in our reserves in case of contingencies or military conflict," a White House official previously said in an email to Fox News Digital. "Everything we send to Ukraine is in excess of that. So, the U.S. is not running out of ammunition ourselves."

Fox News' Matteo Cina contributed to this report.

Red Sox fans take advantage of flooded Fenway Park during rain delay

When the storms grew too heavy for the baseball diamond to handle, Boston Red Sox fans made their trip to Fenway Park worth it.

The skies opened up as the Sox were playing against the New York Mets Friday night, resulting in the game being suspended in the fourth inning. The game's being made up Saturday afternoon.

The rain was so severe stairways looked like waterfalls, and the warning track looked like a swamp.

Fans came to the quick realization that the game was probably not going to be resumed, so they made the best of it.

Not only did stairs become waterfalls, but the concourse became a pool party.

One area of the walkway in the ballpark was flooded several inches, leaving many fans unable to walk through.

One fan shed his shirt and dove headfirst into the puddle.

And he did so a second time.

Even members of the Sox had trouble getting around the tunnel of Fenway. Justin Turner made the trek through some thick water and captured it on camera.

When play resumed Saturday afternoon, the "delay" had officially been 18 hours and one minute, but who's counting?

The Mets led Boston, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth at the time of the suspension. The second game is slated to begin 7:10 p.m. instead of the regularly scheduled 4:10 p.m. start time.

But McCreary, who would've been 50 today, didn't have any known affiliations with the California university or a home in the area, police said, making his death that much more puzzling.

McCreary was a Texas native last seen alive in 2009, UC Berkeley Police said.

But how he died and ended up in an empty campus building is perplexing as it is scary.

"Forensic and other evidence indicates the death occurred many years ago," UC Berkeley said in a statement. "Based on the condition of the bones analyzed by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office, McCreary’s death is a homicide."

Police have turned to the public and asked for help closing the case.

Trump calls for death penalty for human traffickers, vows to revive Title 42 to end child trafficking

Former President Donald Trump on Friday vowed to pursue the death penalty for human traffickers and to revive a now-defunct immigration measure to combat child trafficking, if he's re-elected to the White House.

"I will use Title 42 to end the child trafficking crisis by returning all trafficked children to their families in their home countries, without delay," Trump said in a new campaign video posted on social media. "And I will urge Congress to ensure that anyone caught trafficking children across our border receives the death penalty immediately."

The Title 42 public health order was implemented by the Trump administration, allowing border officials to expel migrants without granting them an asylum hearing in order to limit the spread of COVID-19. Biden rescinded the policy earlier this year.

'SOUND OF FREEDOM' ACTOR JIM CAVIEZEL CALLS OUT MEDIA ATTACKS ON HIT FILM: THEY ARE 'QUAKING IN THEIR BOOTS

Trump, the frontrunner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, touted his record as president for improving the security of the southern border and lambasted the Biden administration for overseeing a surge of illegal immigration into the U.S.

"When I'm back in the White House, I will immediately end the Biden border nightmare that traffickers are using to exploit vulnerable women and children," said Trump. "We will fully secure the border. I will wage war on the cartels just as I destroyed the ISIS caliphate, 100% gone, 100% destroyed."

Trump's comments came after he hosted a screening of the hit film "Sound of Freedom" at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, this week. He promoted and encouraged others to see the movie, which chronicles former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard's efforts to rescue trafficked children. Ballard, his wife, producer Eduardo Verastegui, and lead actor Jim Caviezel all attended the screening.

TRUMP'S 2024 GOP RIVALS REACT TO FORMER PRESIDENT'S POTENTIAL THIRD INDICTMENT: ‘DANGEROUS PRECEDENT’

While the film has enjoyed success at the box office, some liberal media outlets derided the project as associated with QAnon, a right-wing community that has been accused of buying into fringe conspiracy theories. The movie has sparked discussions about the prevalence of human trafficking in the U.S. and other countries and what can be done to combat it.

"Under my leadership we did more than any other administration in history to combat human trafficking and to end modern-day slavery," said Trump, who cited relevant executive orders and legislation he signed, such as the Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Re-authorization Act and the Abolish Human Trafficking Act. "Together we will end the scourge of human trafficking, and we will defend the dignity of human life."

Trump's latest campaign proposal for human traffickers came about a month after he advocated for imposing the death penalty on convicted drug dealers, during an interview with Fox News.

Putin biding time for revenge on mercenary warlord, CIA chief says: 'ultimate apostle of payback'

CIA Director William J. Burns warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin likely has more business with Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin after Prigozhin's attempted rebellion.

"I think … what we're seeing is a very complicated dance between Prigozhin and Putin," Burns told the Aspen Security forum Thursday. "I think Putin is someone who generally thinks that revenge is a dish best served cold."

Burns speculated Putin would continue looking for an angle to deal with Prigozhin despite resolving the attempted rebellion by agreeing to send the Wagner chief into exile in Belarus, saying Putin is "the ultimate apostle of payback."

"I would be surprised if Prigozhin escapes further retribution for this," Burns stressed. "In that sense … if I were Prigozhin, I wouldn't fire my food taster."

PRIGOZHIN APPEARS PUBLICLY FOR FIRST TIME SINCE MUTINY, SUGGESTS MERCENARIES WON'T FIGHT IN UKRAINE

Prigozhin, self-proclaimed founder and leader of the mercenary Wagner Group, marched his troops toward Moscow after claiming the Kremlin authorized an attack on his forces. The march brought his troops within 125 miles of Moscow before Prigozhin ordered them to turn around and return to base while he departed for Belarus.

Media and experts labeled the march as one of the most significant challenges to Putin's regime in his 23 years in power.

Prigozhin has returned to Russia since his exile began, with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko confirming earlier this month that Prigozhin had visited St. Petersburg and Russian outlet Fontanka, reporting the visit was to reclaim weapons confiscated by authorities during searches.

Putin’s position remains difficult, according to Burns. The Russian president doesn’t want to give the appearance of "overreacting to things," but he most likely wants to try and separate Prigozhin from his forces, which remain "useful" to Putin due to their involvement in various global enterprises in Africa, Libya and Syria.

"I think what he’s going to do is separate Prigozhin and undercut him but preserve what’s of value to him," Burns said.

Putin said the Wagner troops involved in the march had "betrayed" Russia, but he offered contracts with the Ministry of Defense to any troop who did not support or take part in the attempted rebellion.

Burns also revealed the CIA had noted significant attention to a video the organization had posted on Telegram instructing dissatisfied Russians how they can safely contact the CIA.

"We’ve had two and a half million views of that telegram video in the first week it was on, so the truth is there’s a lot of disaffection in Russia, in the elite and outside it in Russia right now, and we’re not wasting the opportunity as an intelligence service to try and take advantage of it," he revealed.

MULTIPLE CASUALTIES REPORTED AS RUSSIAN ONSLAUGHT OF UKRAINE CONTINUES FOR 3RD CONSECUTIVE EVENING

"I think Putin is already a little bit uneasy as he looks over his shoulder … and the debate that goes on within the Russian elite right now," Burns added. "It would be crazy for us not to take advantage of what is, in effect, a once-in-a-generation opportunity as a human intelligence service."

Opposition to Putin has remained scarce due to a number of high-profile accidents that have led to the disappearance or deaths of several men who had formerly counted themselves close allies of Putin. Nearly a dozen men died after they had criticized the invasion, Euro News reported.

Ivan Pechorin, a managing director for the aviation industry at the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and Arctic, died Sept. 12, 2022, after reportedly falling from a speeding boat off the coast of Vladivostok.

Ravil Maganov, chairman of Russian oil giant Lukoil, died after reportedly falling from the sixth-floor window of a Moscow hospital on Sept. 1, 2022. He and his company had urged Putin to end the invasion, calling it a "tragedy." Lukoil claimed Maganov "passed away after a severe illness."

RUSSIA TESTING BIDEN RESOLVE IN SYRIA AMID STRING OF ‘UNPROFESSIONAL’ INCIDENTS

Aleksandr Subbotin, a former top manager of Lukoil, was found dead in the basement of a Moscow home in May after he reportedly visited a healer to cure him of hangover symptoms but instead suffered heart failure.

But the war has proven difficult for Putin, and Ukraine’s counteroffensive has not helped matters, though Burns acknowledged the effort has been "a hard slog" and will "take time" to make progress.

"I am, however, an optimist … that the Ukrainians will be able to make advances," Burns noted.

"I think the thing sometimes that it's easy to forget is that behind those considerable fixed defenses that the Russians have built in southern Ukraine, there are … some pretty significant structural weaknesses, poor morale and even general shape, to put it mildly, on the Russian side," he explained. Burns also noted the "disarray" in the political and very senior military leadership.

"So, I think it is going to be a tough slog, but we're going to do everything we can as an intelligence agency to provide the kind of intelligence support and sharing that's going to help the Ukrainians to make progress," he said.
