Navy vet brutally mugged in Philadelphia while walking his dog, gets 100 stitches

A retired Navy commander was sent to the hospital and needed at least 100 stitches after he was brutally mugged in the "City of Brotherly Love."

Philadelphia police are searching for a suspect after victim Scott Harris was attacked late Saturday night while taking his dog for a walk. The incident happened near the intersection of 30th and Jefferson streets, in the Brewerytown neighborhood, FOX 29 Philadelphia reported

Harris told the outlet he was walking his dog, Nora, near a local playground when he got jumped. His head was injured in the attack, and he cannot remember much of what happened.

"Large party going on across the street that in hindsight I probably should not have walked near, next thing I remember I'm in the ER because I kind of blacked out after that," he said.

2 KILLED, 3 WOUNDED IN PHILADELPHIA GUN VIOLENCE OVER THE WEEKEND

Police said Harris' wallet containing credit cards and his ID were stolen in the mugging. Authorities have not released a description of the attacker.

An ambulance took Harris to the hospital Saturday night, where he was treated for a brain injury, broken teeth and severe swelling and bruising in the face.

"The surgeon said he stopped counting at 100 stitches," Harris told FOX 29, many of which were put inside his mouth.

"I did a year in a war zone in Iraq, did two years in Ukraine, and would not have expected this to happen in my own neighborhood," Harris said.

OFF-DUTY CORRECTIONS OFFICER TURNS TABLES ON WOULD-BE CARJACKER, SHOOTS HIM AT PHILADELPHIA GAS STATION

The victim's partner, Joseph Hurchick, said he was home at the time of the attack and believes the perpetrator was someone from the large party at the playground. His surveillance camera filmed three women helping Harris and Nora home.

"They brought him back, otherwise I don't know what would have happened," Hurchick told FOX 29. "We were on the stoop and he was just bleeding, I was on the phone with 911, because I didn't know where the blood was coming from, I didn't know if he was stabbed."

The couple said police have failed to respond to their multiple complaints about large, out-of-control crowds from outside the neighborhood throwing late night parties at the playground.

"This is what happens when something is not policed, and it could have been worse," Hurchick said. "It's going to take a murder for this to stop."

CRISIS IN KENSINGTON: IF YOU WANT TO ‘SHOOT UP IN FRONT OF POLICE,’ THIS IS THE PLACE: MAYORAL CANDIDATE

Harris and Hurchick have lived in Brewerytown for four years and once considered the park across the street a selling point for their home. But not anymore.

"I want more of a police presence, or lock the park up at night," Hurchick said. "Just patrol the neighborhood."

"It's really upsetting because you want to feel safe at home," said Harris.

German tennis pro rips US Open fans for treatment of 'non-American' players after loss: 'No respect for me'

German tennis player Laura Siegemund ripped fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night after she said she was disrespected by the American fan base rooting for 19-year-old tennis star Coco Gauff.

The 2022 French Open finalist took issue with Siegemund’s slow pace of play, something the 35-year-old pro admitted to during her post match press conference. But Siegemund defended herself for putting on a "show" in front of the packed crowd, and said she didn’t deserve the treatment she received.

"I am very, very disappointed of the way the people treated me today. I think I’m a fighter. I never did anything against the audience. I stayed calm. I never made, not even a gesture against the audience. And they had no respect for me," an emotional Siegemund told the media.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC SECURES TOP RANKING AFTER US OPEN VICTORY FOLLOWING LONG-AWAITED RETURN

"They had no respect for the way I played. They have no respect for the player that I am. They have no respect for tennis, for good tennis. And this is something that I have to say that hurts really bad."

Siegemund said there was "no doubt" she played slow, but said she was not trying "sneaky ways to win this match."

"There is no doubt that I am slow. There is no doubt about that. I’m getting time violations. There is no doubt about that I should be quicker, but at the same time, it’s how I play. I’m very slow. I do it for me, I don’t do it against the other one. Clapping when you miss the first serve, those kinds of things, I have no understanding for it."

She continued: "This kind of unfair – just respectless behavior toward the non-American player, I have only experienced here on this court."

"I understand they are crazy for the American and they want her to win but to treat the opponent like this, it’s just not good for tennis."

Siegemund said the entire experience of Monday night’s match has forced her to think twice about returning to the U.S. Open.

"I mean I would only come back because it’s a Slam, but for sure not for the people and to give them a show."

Gauff got into a heated discussion with official Marijana Veljovic in the third set over Siegemund’s slow play. She said after the match that she had been "patient" and eventually the crowd voiced their own opinion.

"She was going over the time since the first set. I never said anything. I would look at the umpire, and she didn’t do anything," Gauff said. "Then obviously the crowd started to notice that she was taking long, so you would hear people in the crowd yelling, 'Time!'"

Gauff will next face rising tennis star Mirra Andreeva, 16, in the second round on Wednesday.

FBI probes Uzbek asylum seekers who crossed border with help from trafficker linked to foreign terror group

Federal authorities are investigating a cohort of Uzbek nationals, who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border and claimed asylum in the United States, after new intelligence found they relied on assistance from a human trafficker linked to a "foreign terrorist organization," Fox News confirmed Tuesday.

"Intelligence reporting alerted us to a human smuggling network working to facilitate the travel of Uzbek nationals to the United States," White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement to Fox News. "As with all identified human smuggling networks – which seek to prey on the vulnerable and evade nations’ legal systems – the U.S. government immediately took steps to successfully disrupt it."

"Reporting by the U.S. Intelligence Community revealed that one overseas member of the smuggling network had a connection to a foreign terrorist organization," Watson continued, without specifying which terror organization. "However, there was no indication – and remains no indication – that any of the individuals facilitated by this network have a connection to a foreign terrorist organization or are engaged in plotting a terrorist attack in the United States."

The U.S. government has taken steps to identify all those whose entry to the United States was facilitated by this smuggling network and "has utilized the full suite of law enforcement tools to assess such individuals to ensure that they do not pose ongoing public safety and national security concerns," Watson said.

TEXAS NATIONAL GUARD LAUNCHES PROBE AFTER MEMBER FIRES ACROSS BORDER, REPORTEDLY WOUNDING MEXICAN NATIONAL

Since this information became available, Watson said those encountered at the border "who fit the profile associated with individuals who were facilitated by this network are being placed into expedited removal, being thoroughly vetted against national security and public safety systems, and generally detained pending removal."

"The U.S. government worked with a partner government overseas; that government detained key members of the network abroad, including the one linked to a foreign terrorist organization, and helped to successfully disrupt its smuggling activities," Watson said.

"We are working closely with foreign partners to shut down the travel routes being used by individuals associated with this network. The United States continues to share appropriate information with foreign counterparts with the aim of preventing individuals associated with this network from traveling to this hemisphere in the first place."

Watson concluded, stating the National Security Council believes "that human smuggling is a global scourge, and we are committed to staying ahead of this evolving threat."

CNN first reported that migrants from Uzbekistan crossed the U.S.-Mexico border earlier this year and were screened by the Department of Homeland Security, but nothing in the intelligence community's databases raised red flags. CNN reported that later on, the FBI learned about a smuggling network – that included at least one person with ties to ISIS – that was helping migrants from Uzbekistan go to the U.S.

CALIFORNIA BORDER PATROL AGENTS SHOT AT BY GROUP SMUGGLING ILLEGAL MIGRANTS: ‘CALLOUS DISPLAY’

"While the FBI has not identified a specific terrorism plot associated with foreign nationals who recently entered the United States at the southern border, we always work with our field offices across the country, as well as our domestic and international partners, to identify any potential illegal activity or terrorism threats," an FBI spokesperson told Fox News Digital. "As always, we ask anyone with information about federal crimes or threats to public safety to report it to the FBI."

"Whenever we have indicators that criminal actors – such as those involved in human smuggling – have connections to terrorism, we work diligently with our partners to investigate and understand how foreign terrorist organizations may attempt to exploit their capabilities so that we can best mitigate any risk to the American public," the FBI spokesperson added.

The newfound intelligence ignited a series of urgent meetings among top national security and administration officials, and staffers on key congressional committees have been notified, sources told CNN. Sources also told CNN that the alleged human smuggler has been detained by Turkish authorities at the behest of the United States.

"DHS and our intelligence, counterterrorism, and law enforcement partners screen and vet individuals prior to their entry to the United States to prevent anyone known to pose a threat from entering the country," a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in an email to Fox News Digital. "DHS continually monitors all available sources of intelligence and information related to potential threats and if any new information emerges, we work closely with the FBI and other partners to take appropriate action."

Jets’ CJ Uzomah lays out high expectations for 2023 season: ‘Go to the playoffs and win a Super Bowl’

Expectations are running high in the New York Jets locker room, and for veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah, that absolutely includes winning a Super Bowl.

During an appearance on ESPN’s "Get Up" on Monday, Uzomah spoke bluntly about the team’s ultimate goal heading into the 2023 season and the impact four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers has already had on the offense.

"Personally, our expectation is to go to the playoffs and win a Super Bowl," he said.

JETS' AARON RODGERS FINDS GARRETT WILSON FOR FIRST PRESEASON TOUCHDOWN

"If that’s not the mindset of every person in our locker room, they’re in the wrong place. But I know that’s their expectation."

Uzomah, who spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals before signing with the Jets on a three-year deal in 2022, said the expectation to win a Super Bowl also comes with the motivation for the team’s long-struggling offense to finally match up with its dynamic defense.

"I know a lot of people and a lot of coaches, they’re like, ‘We don’t want to say Super Bowl. We don’t want to say this. We don’t want to say that' sometimes. For us, we’re like, ‘Man, how good can our offense be?’ We can be one of the best offenses to do it. That’s our goal."

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

He continued: "We know we have one of the best defenses in the NFL and we want to show we have one of the best offenses in the NFL as well."

Rodgers made his debut for the Jets in Saturday night’s preseason win over the New York Giants, during which he connected with 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson on a 14-yard touchdown pass.

It was his first time playing in the preseason since 2018.

"I got in, didn’t get hurt, scored," Rodgers said after the 32-24 victory. "It was a good night."

Rodgers, entering his 19th NFL season, admitted to having "butterflies" before stepping onto the field in a new jersey, but the crowd's enthusiasm at MetLife Stadium helped alleviate any jitters.

"I loosened up pretty good when I got the ovation when I took the field. That was a special moment."

The Jets new offense under offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is hoping to change the narrative when they open the season at home against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 11.

Mike Pence dredges up Vivek Ramaswamy's past January 6 statements: 'A stain on American history'

Former Vice President Mike Pence's campaign slammed Vivek Ramaswamy for supposedly flip-flopping on the issue of Jan. 6 on Sunday, highlighting the candidate's past comment condemning the incident.

Pence's campaign produced multiple instances where Ramaswamy appeared to contradict his own past statements regarding the pro-Trump storming of the U.S. Capitol.

"On August 4, 2023, [Ramaswamy] refused to say he would have certified the results of the 2020 election on January 6, 2021," the Pence campaign wrote. "Yet at Wednesday's GOP debate, he raised his hand in support of what Mike Pence did in following the Constitution."

The campaign cited a Jan. 11, 2021, op-ed Ramaswamy wrote for The Wall Street Journal, in which he referred to the "disgraceful Capitol riot" as a "stain on American history."

VIVEK RAMASWAMY WAS THE MOST GOOGLE-SEARCHED CANDIDATE AT THE GOP DEBATE

The following day on Jan. 12, 2021, Ramawamy referred to his op-ed in a statement: "What Trump did last week was wrong. Downright abhorrent. Plain and simple. I've said it before and did so in my piece."

A litany of other examples followed. The Pence campaign referred to Ramaswamy's own book, "Nation of Victims," which was published in 2022.

CNN, POLITICO JOURNALISTS AT GOP DEBATE REPORTEDLY SAID VIVEK RAMASWAMY ‘COULD BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT'

"It was a dark day for democracy. The loser of the last election refused to concede the race, claimed the election was stolen, raised hundreds of millions of dollars from loyal supporters, and is considering running for executive office again." Ramaswamy wrote. "I'm referring, of course, to Donald Trump."

"I was especially disappointed when I saw President Trump take a page from the Stacey Abrams playbook," Ramaswamy wrote. "His claims were just as weak as Abrams'."

Ramaswamy's tune on the Capitol riot seemed to change in June and July, as he appeared to take a far more sympathetic view of the incident.

"I will pardon *all* Americans who were targets of politicized federal prosecutions & those who were denied due process. This includes all peaceful Jan 6 protesters. It’s important that every candidate is clear about where we stand on the hard issues, not just the standard GOP talking points," he wrote June 8 on X, formerly known as Twitter.

TRUMP BOOKED AT FULTON COUNTY JAIL AFTER CHARGES STEMMING FROM 2020 ELECTION PROBE

The candidate emphasized that view again in mid-July, stating that "pervasive censorship" caused Jan. 6.

"You tell people in this country they cannot speak. That is when they scream. You tell people they cannot scream. That is when they tear things down," he said at the time.

Ramaswamy was asked about the issue again Sunday morning during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press." He now says he would have championed "reforms" to the voting process and made the certification of the election result contingent on passing those reforms.

Biden plans to ask Congress for funding to develop new COVID vaccine, may recommend shot for all

President Biden said Friday he plans to request additional funding from Congress for the development of a new COVID-19 vaccine, adding he may require everyone to take it whether they previously received a vaccine or not.

Biden, who is vacationing in the Lake Tahoe area, was asked by a reporter on Friday if he could say anything about the uptick of COVID cases and a new variant.

"Yes, I can," the president said. "I signed off this morning on a proposal we have to present to Congress a request for additional funding for a new vaccine that is necessary, that works."

BIDEN ADMIN TO RENEW PUSH FOR AMERICANS TO GET COVID-19 BOOSTERS

He added, "Tentatively it is recommended that it will likely be recommended everybody get it no matter whether they’ve gotten it before or not."

A $40 million funding request to Congress from the White House on Aug. 11 did not mention coronavirus money, but included money for Ukraine, U.S. federal disaster funds, and funds to bolster the enforcement along the U.S.-Mexico border to slow the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.

FLU SHOT RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE CDC: ‘VACCINATION SHOULD CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE SEASON’

In 2022, the Biden administration requested $9.25 billion to fight the virus, but congressional lawmakers refused the request.

The Associated Press said officials are expecting an updated COVID-19 vaccine containing one version of the omicron strain called XBB.1.5.

The new vaccine is a change from today’s combination shots, which mix the original coronavirus strain with last year’s most common omicron variants.

As coronavirus continues to mutate, there will always be a need to update vaccines.

Next month, people will begin to receive the annual fall COVID-19 shot, as Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax are working on doses of the XBB update.

Still, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will need to sign off on each vaccine, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must issue recommendations for their use.

The new booster program would come nearly a year after Biden declared the COVID-19 pandemic "over" in September 2022, though he said, "We're still doing a lot of work on it."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Editor's note: The headline of this story originally said Biden may "require" everyone take the vaccination, but in his remarks he said "recommend." We have adjusted the headline to reflect this.

Zoom’s reversal after backlash over AI fiasco

We all know Zoom a little too well, the video conferencing platform that exploded in popularity during the pandemic. Today, it is the go-to platform for nearly every office, school, and organization alike.

However, it seems that in its rise to stardom, the company had tried to pull a bit of a fast one on its users, reportedly updating its Terms of Service on its website without sending an email notification to its users or explaining the changes in detail.

Zoom’s initial Terms of Service update

First, Zoom updated its Terms of Service on March 31, 2023, but it actually took effect on July 27, 2023, and included a clause that appeared to some to allow Zoom to use user data and customer content for AI training purposes without customer consent.

Zoom’s update goes unnoticed for months

It seems that no one had really noticed the update until earlier this month. That makes sense when you consider there wasn't a notification that was sent out by the company. Also, how many people really comb through Terms of Services agreements, which in this case is over 1,000 words, for the slightest changes in terms?

Zoom makes clarification after outcry

Understandably, once the news broke, there was a backlash from Zoom's users and others. Fight For the Future, an advocacy group, launched an online petition to demand Zoom change its policy. Subsequently, on August 11, 2023, Zoom was forced to clarify its Terms of Service and make it easier to understand. The company released the following statement in a blog post:

"Following feedback received regarding Zoom’s recently updated terms of service Zoom has updated our terms of service . . . to make it clear that Zoom does not use any of your audio, video, chat, screen sharing, attachments, or other communications like customer content (such as poll results, whiteboard, and reactions) to train Zoom’s or third-party artificial intelligence models."

Eric Yuan, Zoom’s CEO, acknowledged that the company failed to clearly communicate the changes to its users. On his LinkedIn account, Yuan also stated that Zoom " . . . would absolutely never train AI models with customers’ content without getting their explicit consent. If you use our two new generative AI features that have been available on free trials for two months, you can see in the UI that we definitely ask customers if they want to opt-into share content to improve our products and train our AI models."

Zoom’s unconvincing reassurances

All of this did not reassure everyone, and some have criticized the company’s vague language. Zoom claims in its updated Terms of Service that it needs consent to use "Customer Content," but the company can still collect and use other kinds of data that are not classified as Customer Content for AI purposes. This includes the use of other types of data, such as device information, usage data and feedback, for improving their products and services.

Halloween is heaven for 'horror-loving' Ohio woman who's spent $2,000 on spooky items for her house

A woman from Antwerp, Ohio, has spent roughly $2,000 decking out her house with spooky décor – but said her husband doesn't "share the same love of Halloween" as she does.

Elise Neace, 32, has always been into Halloween, she told news service SWNS.

She said she's been watching horror movies since she was 3 years old and celebrates Halloween year 'round.

HALLOWEEN DECOR SWARMS SHELVES IN SUMMER, AND SOCIAL MEDIA USERS SOUND OFF: ‘ALREADY?!’

After buying a place six years ago, she said she wanted to put her own spin on it.

Today, she's decorated three rooms in her home with spooky décor.

Her husband, Zach, 32, works at a factory, she said – and told her he "didn’t care" what she did.

"I have always been into Halloween," she told SWNS. "I love horror movies."

So Neace decorated her living room, dining room and bedroom with spooky items such as signs, skull cushions and cobweb placemats.

WOMAN REPORTEDLY CALLS FOR HALLOWEEN DECORATION BAN BECAUSE 'KEEP OUT' BATHROOM SIGN CONFUSED HER

She's spent between $1,000 to $2,000 over six years, she estimated, and said she's slowly but steadily adding to her ghostly decorations.

Ultimately she said she wants to make every room in the house fit into her Halloween theme – noting her home "always has Halloween décor up."

The certified medical administrative assistant told SWNS, "I’d like to do the entire house."

She said she jumped at the chance to transform her new home into a haunted house – and has spent the last six years sourcing and buying spooky signs, Halloween themed kitchen towels and mugs and cushions.

She said, "The walls were pink when we moved [in]. The living room and dining room are now painted a moody blue."

HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN: THE ORIGINS OF THE HOLIDAY

She said her favorite part of the home is her wall in her dining room – which she's covered in signs that say, among other things, "Home sweet haunted home" and "Witches' market."

She said most visitors to her home enjoy the spooky décor.

"Most people love it," she said. "They know who I am and that it makes me happy."

She said she's just started on getting the bedroom into the Halloween spirit as well – and hopes to paint it a dark maroon or green, SWNS reported.

Said Neace, "I got some cute skull pillows. I changed the bedding and got some ghost blankets and an orange bed spread."

In the kitchen, she has Halloween-themed mugs and tea towels, she said.

HALLOWEEN OUTRAGE: PARENTS SPEAK UP AFTER PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL DISTRICT CANCELS KIDS' OUTDOOR COSTUME PARADE

She also has an entire wardrobe of black and dark clothes – and loves to put on fun Halloween make-up each year, SWNS noted.

Said Neace, "The first movie I remember watching was ‘Pet Sematary.’ I watched it so many times my grandparents gave [me] the VHS tape when I was 3."

She added, "I like the whole aspect of dressing up and having fun."

Some other families, however, may not be quite as fond of Halloween celebrations as she is, as Fox News Digital recently reported – at least not well ahead of the actual holiday.

As Halloween merchandise appears to creep onto store shelves earlier and earlier every year, social media users have been making their feelings known over the past few months.

"It’s…. It’s not even July!" a TikTok user commented on a June 23 video showing Halloween decor at a craft store.

"Wow! Already?!?!" another user wrote June 27.

Some customers may feel "rushed" when they see fall or Halloween items released early – and that feeling can seem "overwhelming" to them, one person commented.

Josh Jacobs signs deal with Raiders, ending holdout

The Las Vegas Raiders will have the leading rusher from 2022 in their backfield to start the 2023 NFL season.

Josh Jacobs, who has been holding out during training camp, has agreed to a deal, the Raiders announced in a press release.

The deal is a one-year contract that could be worth up to $12 million, according to NFL Network.

TREY LANCE WANTED OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE FOR BACKUP QB JOB ELSEWHERE, KYLE SHANAHAN SAYS

Jacobs has been holding out after the two sides failed to reach a long-term agreement in July, refusing to sign a $10.091 million franchise tag.

Jacobs confirmed the news on X, the company formerly known as Twitter.

Jacobs led the NFL in rushing in 2022, gaining 1,653 yards on the ground with 12 touchdowns. He played in all 17 games last season and played in 15 games in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The Raiders are entering a new era after releasing Derek Carr in February. Las Vegas signed veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in March.

One of the main topics of conversations this NFL offseason has been the reluctance of teams to pay running backs, even highly successful ones like Jacobs.

New York Giants running Saquon Barkley also failed to reach a long-term agreement, settling for a one-year deal worth up to $11 million with a $2 million signing bonus in July.

"The reality of it is, I mean, one, I kind of just followed my heart," Barkley said after day two of camp in East Rutherford, N.J. "Obviously, I heard what everyone was saying in the news and on social media, but I kind of just followed my heart. And then you’ve got to look at it from a business point, from a business view. I felt like, ‘What’s the best thing that I can do?’

"Some people may agree or disagree with this, to sit out or sit in, and I feel like for this year specifically, the best thing that I can do for myself would be coming back, going out there and play the game that I love, playing for my teammates, doing something that I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid."

"Obviously, I know what’s going on with the running back situation and me being tagged and the value of the running back continually going down. The only way that I feel like that’s going to change is someone has to make it change. God willing, hopefully I can be one of the people to do it."

Veteran running back Dalvin Cook was released by the Minnesota Vikings in June following four straight Pro Bowl seasons. Cook signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets last week.

Former Louisiana judge granted bond 3 years after conviction for sex crimes against teenagers

A former Louisiana judge who was sentenced to 14 years in prison after being convicted of four sex crimes against teenage friends of his daughters in 2020, has been granted bond as he seeks to appeal his conviction, according to reports.

FOX 8 in New Orleans reported that Judge Franz Ziblich granted the request for bond from former St. John the Baptist Parish Judge Elzey "Jeff" Perilloux, although the Attorney General Jeff Landry's office objected to the request.

Ziblich granted bond for Perilloux in the amount of $300,000. Once posted, the former judge must comply with a protective order, take mandatory sex offender classes and check in with law enforcement bi-weekly.

FORMER LOUISIANA JUDGE GETS 14 YEARS FOR SEX CRIMES INVOLVING DAUGHTERS' TEEN FRIENDS

The AG’s office requested a halt on the ruling to allow the Louisiana 5th Circuit Court of Appeal time to review it.

A spokesperson for the AG’s office said Thursday that the Louisiana 5th Circuit Court of Appeal granted an emergency request to stay the district court’s ruling that allowed for Perilloux’s appeal bond.

The stay was granted, pending resolution of a review of the district court’s decision by a higher court.

LOUISIANA POLICE CAPTURE SUSPECT IN MURDER, ASSAULT OF 11-YEAR-OLD TEXAS GIRL

Until that review is completed, Perilloux will remain in custody.

During Perilloux’s five-day trial in September 2020, prosecutors said he groomed three girls who were ages 14, 15, and 17, when the crimes took place.

"Sex offenses against children are the most serious of crimes which cause permanent psychological harm," Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said at the time.

Throughout the trial, Perilloux maintained his innocence and said the girls were like daughters to him.

For two of the crimes, Perilloux was convicted of inappropriately touching a 15-year-old girl during two separate back massages in 2017. In another incident that year, a 14-year-old girl said Perilloux rubbed sunscreen on her against her wishes.

A jury found him guilty of three felony counts of indecent behavior with juveniles, while a judge found Perilloux guilty of one misdemeanor sexual battery charge.

UFO whistleblower unhappy with Christie response to debate question: 'Americans deserve answers...not jokes'

FIRST ON FOX – Former Navy pilot and Americans for Safe Aerospace founder Ryan Graves called out Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie for laughing off questions about UFOs on Wednesday.

"I get the UFO question?" Christie said at the first Republican primary debate, laughing when asked about what he would do in the White House if he had authority over what the Pentagon now calls unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs.

"I think it's horrible that just because I’m from New Jersey, you asked me about unidentified flying objects and Martians," Christie said to laughter. "We're different, but we're not that different."

LAWMAKERS DEMAND TRUTH ABOUT SECRET UFO PROGRAMS IN LETTER TO INSPECTOR GENERAL

Christie then pivoted to speaking about the importance of truth-telling in the White House. "The job of the President of the United States is to level with the American people about everything," he said. "The job of the President of the United States is to stand for truth," adding that threats to children's education were more significant than UFOs.

Graves fired back at Christie over his comments in a statement to Fox News Digital Thursday.

"When is laughter ever an acceptable response to a national security question?" Graves wrote, referencing Christie's flippant response to the question.

CHRIS CHRISTIE HIT WITH 'LOTS OF BOOS' AFTER GOP DEBATE INTRODUCTION

"Advanced UAP present a clear and present national security problem, so I invite Gov. Christie and any presidential candidate to meet with Navy pilots who have witnessed advanced UAP that exceed our tactical jets," Graves added. "Americans deserve answers and transparency, not jokes about aliens that perpetuate stigma and suppresses reporting."

Other major political figures have spoken publicly about UFOs in recent months.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, N.Y., said in July that Americans have a right to know about "non-human" intelligences operating in the world.

"The American public has a right to learn about technologies of unknown origins, non-human intelligence, and unexplainable phenomena," he said. "We are not only working to declassify what the government has previously learned about these phenomena but to create a pipeline for future research to be made public."

Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, a co-sponsor of the UFO disclosure amendment, called on the executive branch to aid in exploring the issue of UAPs.

"There is a lot we still don’t know about these UAPs and that is a big problem," Rubio also said in July. "We’ve taken some important steps over the last few years to increase transparency and reduce stigmas, but more needs to be done. This is yet another step in that direction, and one that I hope will spur further cooperation from the executive branch."

Graves previously told Fox News Digital that he was launching a campaign "to support commercial aircrew and military UAP witnesses who want to share their accounts."

The campaign will provide a website and a safe "pipeline" for pilots who have witnessed or encountered UAPs directly within their careers to attest to their experience, Graves said.

Delete this app on your Mac before it's too late

Have you ever used your computer in the middle of the night or in a dark room and felt blinded by the brightness of your screen?

That’s not only unpleasant but also potentially bad for your eyes. That’s why many people prefer to use night mode, a feature that adjusts the temperature and contrast on your Mac to make it easier on your eyes.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S FREE CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH SECURITY ALERTS, QUICK TIPS, TECH REVIEWS AND EASY HOW-TO'S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

But before night mode was available, Mac users relied on the app NightOwl to switch between light and dark mode depending on the time of day. Then out of nowhere apparent to any who had downloaded the app, NightOwl took a dark turn and has become a serious security threat.

SAY GOODBYE TO PHOTOBOMBS: EASY WAYS TO REMOVE UNWANTED BACKGROUND OBJECTS

NightOwl was once a useful app that helped Mac users adjust their screen modes according to the time of day. That changed after November 2022 when the original developer of NightOwl, Benjamin Kramser, sold the app to a company called TPE.FYI LLC. He has since accused the new owner of turning the app into what amounts to a malware delivery vehicle.

Kramser has posted on his developer site that the NightOwl app under new ownership "has opted to monetize the app by integrating a third-party SDK. This decision is not affiliated with me in any way, and I do not endorse it in any form."

Although the more recent NightOwl owner has said in another report that the allegations are inaccurate and false, we have not heard back from TPE.FYI LLC after reaching out for additional comment. Apple has since reportedly revoked the app's signing certificate.

BEST PROMPTS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF AN AI CHATBOT

Why should you care about a nefarious app and uninstall it asap?

Unwanted traffic: By injecting malicious code into the app and making your device a "gateway," NightOwl could send and receive internet data that was not meant for you. This is like having strangers use your home address for their online activities without your knowledge. This could use up your internet speed and make your connection slower.

Privacy concerns: With your device acting as a relay for unknown online traffic, there's a lingering question: What kind of data is passing through? Personal data leaks, potential spying activities, or even illegal content could be routed via your Mac, jeopardizing your privacy.

Legal implications: If unsavory activities were conducted via your device, guess whose digital fingerprint is all over it? Yours. It could lead to potential legal complications even if you're an unwilling and unknowing participant.

In essence, this app that seemed innocent enough became a Trojan horse. It is a deceitful tactic for botnets to sneak onto your device and infect it.

Changes buried in the terms of the app were suddenly applied outlining the app's external activity with third parties.

The silver lining? The inherent dark mode in macOS means you no longer need NightOwl perched on your system.

One is left to wonder, if an app that seems innocent can infect my device, how do I protect myself? Do I simply avoid downloading things altogether? No, but definitely try the following:

Trust but verify: While it's tempting to download that flashy new app everyone's talking about, remember to exercise caution. Before any installation:

App Store = Safe haven: Apple's Mac App Store is curated, meaning apps go through checks:

Have strong passwords and use 2-factor authentication: Using the same password across multiple platforms will always make you more vulnerable because if one account gets hacked, they all get hacked. Plus, be sure to activate 2-factor authentication as an extra shield that will prevent a hacker from getting into your accounts. Finally, make sure to use a password manager to keep track of all your passwords.

Some US states reject federal money aimed at replacing dangerous lead pipes

As the Biden administration makes billions of dollars available to remove millions of dangerous lead pipes that can contaminate drinking water and damage brain development in children, some states are turning down funds.

Washington, Oregon, Maine and Alaska declined all or most of their federal funds in the first of five years that the mix of grants and loans is available, The Associated Press found. Some states are less prepared to pay for lead removal projects because, in many cases, the lead must first be found, experts said. And communities are hesitant to take out loans to search for their lead pipes.

States shouldn't "shrug their shoulders" and pass up funds, said Erik Olson, a health and food expert at the environmental group Natural Resources Defense Council.

"It's troubling that a state would decide to take a complete pass on the funding because part of the reason for the funding is to figure out whether you even have lead," Olson said.

PA DEMOCRATS' PUSH FOR ADULT MENTAL HEALTH FUNDING FRUITLESS AS GOP DROPS IT FROM BUDGET PLAN

The Biden administration wants to remove all 9.2 million lead pipes carrying water to U.S. homes. Lead can lower IQ and create behavioral problems in children. The 2021 infrastructure law provides $15 billion to find and replace them. That money will help a lot, but it isn’t enough to get all the toxic pipes out of the ground. State programs distribute the federal funds to utilities.

The Environmental Protection Agency said it is reviewing state requests to decline funds but did not provide a full list of states that have said no so far. That information will be available in October, officials said. States that declined first-year funds can still accept them during the remaining four years.

"EPA has been working closely with our state partners on utilizing Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding that is available," the agency said.

Lead pipes are far more common in some states such as Michigan and Illinois, which each have hundreds of thousands. The harm there is clear. Flint’s lead crisis elevated lead in tap water to a national health issue. Residents of Benton Harbor, Michigan, drank water with too much lead for years until all their lead pipes were replaced. In response, however, Michigan is clamoring for as much money as it can get to remove lead.

The states that declined funds have fewer problematic pipes, but that doesn’t mean lead isn’t an issue. There’s concern about lead in some Maine schools. Portland, Oregon, has struggled with high lead levels for years, although recent tests have been better and officials say the issue isn’t lead pipes, but household plumbing.

Washington accepted $85,000 of $63 million it could have taken and said the decision was based on the limited number of water systems that wanted loans. The EPA estimates the state has 22,000 lead pipes. Oregon, which could have accepted $37 million, said inventories are going to be done with existing staff and resources, adding that utilities have no known lead lines. The EPA projected that the state has 3,530 lead pipes — a relatively small number — based in part on information collected from utilities.

The location of many lead pipes is a mystery. The EPA is requiring communities to provide initial inventories of their lead pipes by October 2024. Maine, which banned lead pipes far earlier than most states, said other funds would be used for inventories and they didn’t have lead replacement projects ready to fund. Most states that rejected funding initially indicated they would probably ask for money in later years.

PENNSYLVANIA ALLOTS $400M IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR ON-THE-JOB INFRASTRUCTURE WORKER TRAINING

To access the grants, there also needs to be demand for loans but utilities are hesitant to seek them out, according to Deirdre Finn, executive director of the Council of Infrastructure Financing Authorities, a group that represents the federally funded state programs that distribute infrastructure funds.

"This is a great opportunity," Finn said. "But it would be helpful if states and utilities had access to 100% grant funding to move these projects along."

Federal funds can only go to replacement projects that remove the entire lead pipe. Lead pipes run from the water main in the street to homes, but the ownership of the pipe is often split between the utility and homeowner. Some cities replace just the portion they own — a harmful practice that spikes lead levels — and paying to replace the homeowner's side is often a problem. Grants can help utilities pay to replace the homeowner's side, Finn said.

The EPA offered early funds based on a state's general drinking water infrastructure needs — not the number of lead pipes. The EPA later developed estimates of each state's lead pipes to inform how future years of funding should be distributed. Therefore, some states were offered more early money than they can spend.

In May, for example, Alaska told the EPA it wanted just $6.8 million of the $28 million it was entitled to receive. Carrie Bohan, facilities program manager in the division of water at the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, said utilities' demand for loans to inventory their systems for lead pipes is "very, very small." But over five years, there will be plenty of federal funds available to find the small number of lead pipes in Alaska and replace them.

Money that’s not used will be redistributed to other states that need it.

"I think it’s a potential disservice to other states if we were to apply for the full amount knowing that we couldn’t make use of it," Bohan said.

But just figuring out how to distribute the money based on need is difficult. In April, the EPA's lead pipe estimate surprised some experts by predicting that Florida had 1.16 million, the most of any state.

The higher estimate meant Florida would get more funds, but the state objected, arguing its utilities would find far more lead in the tap water if it really had that many lead pipes.

"Once these lead line surveys are completed, it is expected that the actual extent of facilities with lead service lines documented in Florida will be significantly less than what was estimated by the EPA," said Brian Miller, a spokesperson with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Tropical Storm Hilary makes landfall in Mexico, threatens flooding in California amid state of emergency

Tropical Storm Hilary made landfall over Mexico's Baja California peninsula late Sunday morning, prompting flash flood warnings in the areas surrounding Los Angeles.

Hilary had weakened from a Category 1 hurricane to tropical storm status Sunday. The National Weather Service has predicted the storm was still likely to bring "catastrophic and life-threatening" flooding to the region and cross into the southwestern U.S. as a tropical storm.

The National Weather Service announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the Los Angeles, Long Beach and Glendale areas all under a flash flood warning until 7:45 p.m. local time.

Rainfall, considered the biggest hazard for the storm, was continuing to increase across portions of southern California, including Los Angeles basin and portions of the desert of southeastern California. The center of the storm is expected to move northward out of Baja California and into southern California over the next 18 to 24 hours, National Hurricane Center Director Dr. Michael Brennan said.

MLB RESCHEDULES 3 GAMES IN CALIFORNIA IN ANTICIPATION OF HURRICANE HILARY IMPACT

"We continue to be very concerned for the potential for life-threatening flash flooding, potentially catastrophic impacts," Brennan said during a NWS forecast, noting the especially high risk of flash flooding in the deserts between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Gusty east to northeast winds are beginning to strengthen along and below the coastal slopes of the mountains with gusts exceeding 40 mph at Crestwood in the San Diego County mountains and Fremont Canyon in the Santa Ana Mountains," NWS San Diego wrote on X, formerly Twitter, earlier Sunday.

HURRICANE HILARY: STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN CALIFORNIA AS MILLIONS BRACE FOR LIFE-THREATENING FLOODING

As of 8 a.m. Pacific time, Hilary was located about 220 miles south-southeast of San Diego, the National Hurricane Center reported. Hilary had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and was moving northwest at 25 mph.

The Mexican cities of Ensenada and Tijuana remained directly in the tropical storm's path, and meteorologists warned that despite weakening, the storm remained treacherous.

A previous advisory from the NWS based in Miami at 2 a.m. had said that Hilary was about 30 miles south of Punta Eugenia, Mexico, and 385 miles from San Diego, California. The maximum sustained wind speed remained unchanged at 85 mph while spreading "heavy rains" northward over the peninsula.

One person drowned Saturday in the Mexican town of Santa Rosalia, on the peninsula’s eastern coast, when a vehicle was swept away in an overflowing stream. Rescue workers managed to save four other people, said Edith Aguilar Villavicencio, the mayor of Mulege township.

It was not immediately clear whether officials considered the fatality related to the hurricane, but video posted by local officials showed torrents of water coursing through the town’s streets.

DESANTIS OFFERS TO ASSIST CALIFORNIA WITH HURRICANE HILARY 'IN ANY WAY WE CAN'

Forecasters said the storm was still expected to enter the history books as the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years, bringing flash floods, mudslides, isolated tornadoes, high winds and power outages. The forecast prompted authorities to issue an evacuation advisory for Santa Catalina Island, urging residents and beachgoers to leave the tourist destination 23 miles off the coast.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday signed an emergency declaration in preparation of the storms expected to come in force Sunday.

He said 7,500 personnel were activated in southern California, with close to 4,000 California Highway Patrol members, 2,000 Caltran workers and mutual aid across the region. Newsom warned residents to take seriously any alerts of flash floods, lighting and possibility of tornadoes.

In Tijuana, fire department head Rafael Carrillo voiced the fear at the back of everyone’s mind in the border city of 1.9 million people, particularly residents who live in homes on steep hillsides.

"If you hear noises, or the ground cracking, it is important for you to check it and get out as fast as possible, because the ground can weaken and your home could collapse," Carrillo said.

Tijuana ordered all beaches closed Saturday, and set up a half dozen storm shelters at sports complexes and government offices.

Mexico’s navy evacuated 850 people from islands off the Baja coast, and deployed almost 3,000 troops for emergency operations. In La Paz, the picturesque capital of Baja California Sur state on the Sea of Cortez, police patrolled closed beaches to keep swimmers out of the whipped-up surf.

Authorities in Los Angeles scrambled to get the homeless off the streets and into shelters, and officials ordered all state beaches in San Diego and Orange counties closed.

Across the region, municipalities ran out of free sandbags and grocery shelves emptied out as residents stockpiled supplies. The U.S. National Park Service closed California’s Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve to keep visitors from becoming stranded amid flooding.

Major League Baseball rescheduled three Sunday games in Southern California, moving them to Saturday as part of split doubleheaders, and SpaceX delayed the launch of a satellite-carrying rocket from a base on California’s central coast until at least Monday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Pence preps for showdown with Trump at first Republican debate — even if Trump doesn't show up

Mike Pence appears ready to face off with former President Donald Trump at next week’s first Republican presidential nomination debate — whether his former running mate is on the stage or not.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity to be in on that stage," the former vice president told Fox News Digital in an interview last month in New Hampshire.

Last week, as he spoke with this reporter at the Iowa State Fair, Pence stressed that he’s "confident that Republican primary voters know that not only do we need new leadership in the White House, but we need new leadership in the Republican Party."

CHECK OUT INITIAL FOX NEWS POWER RANKINGS IN 2024 GOP PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION RACE

For four years in the White House and on the campaign trail, Pence was the then-president’s loyal co-pilot. But that all ended on January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. The attack temporarily disrupted congressional certification of President Biden's 2020 Electoral College victory over Trump.

WHAT PENCE SAID IN HIS FOX NEWS INTERVIEW AT THE IOWA STATE FAIR

Pence was at the Capitol at the time it was attacked, overseeing the joint session of Congress. He was forced, along with members of Congress to temporarily flee to safety as the rioters — some chanting that the then-vice president should be hanged — stormed the building. In following what he saw as his constitutional duties instead of Trump’s wishes, Pence has endured the wrath of the former president and plenty of Trump’s most devout loyalists and supporters.

Now, in the wake of Trump’s back-to-back indictments in connection with the attack on the Capitol and his alleged efforts to try and overturn the 2020 election, Pence is raising the volume.

"I’m very proud of the record of the Trump administration," Pence said last week. "But the president and I took a different path in the end, and sadly, in the last two and a half years, the former president has continued to maintain that I had the right to overturn the election. I had no right to overturn the election. If the American people hear us out, they know that we kept our oath to the Constitution. I’m confident more and more Americans every day are understanding the stand that we took and appreciating our commitment to keep the oath that we made to them and to almighty God."

FIRST ON FOX: FORMER VP MIKE PENCE QUALIFIES FOR FIRST GOP DEBATE

Pence and his small team of close political advisers are looking forward to a showdown with Trump at Wednesday’s Fox News hosted debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which is expected to draw millions of viewers across the country.

"We’re ready," Pence senior adviser Marc Short said in a statement. "We’ve been waiting for this for a while."

Pence, a veteran of two vice presidential general election debates, has been preparing the first showdown by taking part in mock debates. An adviser who asked to remain anonymous emphasized that Pence "will be very well prepared."

Whether Trump joins Pence on the stage is still very debatable.

The Republican National Committee, which is organizing all the presidential primary debates, requires that every candidate sign a pledge to support the GOP’s eventual presidential nominee — regardless of who it is — and not to take part in any debate not sanctioned by the national party committee.

WHO'S STILL FIGHTING TO MAKE THE STAGE AT THE FIRST REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

Trump, so far, has refused to sign the pledge and has yet to make a final decision on whether he’ll show up in Milwaukee.

Pence, speaking to state lawmakers at the National Conference of State Legislatures Wednesday in Indianapolis, Indiana, said "I hope he comes" when asked about Trump.

In his interview with Fox News Digital last week in Des Moines said, Pence said, "Everyone who is willing to step forward and be considered here in the Iowa caucus and the upcoming primaries owes it to the American people to be on that stage to tell their story, to share their vision, and I’m looking forward to being there."

His campaign appeared to goad Trump, with communications director Devin O’Malley questioning in a recent statement whether "former President Trump has the courage to show up" at the debate.

Pence’s political team appears to welcome the contrast between the steady former vice president spotlighting his conservative stances on numerous issues, including abortion, with Trump, who’s known for his unpredictability and fireworks.

The former vice president, in comments Friday at a 2024 confab in Atlanta, Georgia, pointed to the Capitol attack and spotlighted that "my differences with the president go far beyond that fateful day. And I hope to have a chance to debate them."

Even though Trump might not appear on the stage in Milwaukee, he’ll still be front-and-center at the debate.

"If he’s not there, he’ll still be there," said Fox News’ anchor Bret Baier, who, along with fellow host Martha MacCallum, is a co-moderator of the debate. "He’ll be a part of questioning."

A Pence adviser said the former vice president’s strategy won’t change, regardless of whom he’s sharing the stage with.

"Mike Pence has been consistent throughout this race about how he’s approached his contrasts with Trump and all the other candidates. He’s not going to change who he is when he gets up on the debate stage."

Netflix employee missing in California just two weeks after moving to Bay Area for dream job

A 22-year-old Cornell University graduate who just moved to California for a dream job at Netflix has vanished under strange circumstances, according to his friends and family.

Yohanes Kidane, a computer scientist from Rochester, New York, who began work as a software engineer with the streaming giant just two weeks ago, was last seen getting into an Uber at 28 North Fourth Street in San Jose around 7:15 p.m. PT Monday.

Days earlier, he had told friends that another rideshare experience had became so concerning that he didn't plan on riding alone ever again. Now his family is looking for answers.

MAN SPOTTED AT OREGON STORAGE UNIT NOT CONNECTED TO MEKENNA REILEY DISAPPEARANCE, SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYS

"What we do know is that he was on camera leaving the apartment building getting into an Uber Monday evening," said Yosief Kidane, Yohanes' older brother. "We know that his belongings, his phone and his wallet, were found at the Golden Gate Bridge Tuesday morning by a citizen, who collected them and tried to help us return them to him. We know that an officer found his backpack at the Golden Gate Bridge later Tuesday afternoon, and we know that he was never at home at work on Tuesday or Wednesday."

No money was missing from his wallet, and his laptop was still inside the backpack.

Kidane's family and friends from Cornell have formed a "task force" and traveled to the Bay Area to take part in the search. They also have a private investigator and are hoping that someone who saw something on Monday evening will come forward with information that leads to the missing man's whereabouts.

BODY FOUND IN OREGON RESERVOIR AMID SEARCH FOR MISSING WOMAN LAST SEEN NAKED AND AFRAID AT CONSTRUCTION SITE

They have been scouring shelters, hospitals and other places for signs of Kidane, but so far they have found nothing and are asking for the public's help.

"We just really hope that if some people saw something, or saw someone, or something unusual or someone that looked like him to come forward with anything they have to the San Jose Police Department," he said.

The brothers are a year apart, Kidane said, and so close that many people mistake the for twins.

"People couldn't tell us apart – they mixed up our names," he said. "We went to university together, where we studied together. . . . We got through our problems together, and even when there's been periods where we weren't in the same area, or we hadn't seen each other for a while, he's always been the part of me and integral to who I am as a person."

Austin Farmer, Kidane's former roommate at Cornell, said that days before the disappearance, the missing software engineer had told friends about another suspicious rideshare encounter.

"The Uber driver insisted, if it was an actual Uber driver, that instead of taking him to the location that he needed to be, he's like, 'Oh, I'm going to take you to Oakland. It's much safer there,'" Farmer said. "And he just wouldn't let Yohanes go where he needed to go. So they took him to downtown Oakland. I guess he eventually got back to his apartment or wherever he lives, but that was pretty suspicious."

During the experience, Kidane texted another friend that he "might be in trouble."

"He asked me to cancel to pay extra," Kidane wrote. "I got a sense he's taking me there for no good reason."

After the ordeal, he followed up: "Never going in Uber solo again in SF."

San Jose police, who are leading a multi-agency investigation into Kidane's disappearance, told Fox News Digital that the investigation is ongoing but that they had no additional information they could provide to the public as of Friday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 408-277-8900.

A friend has established a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the search effort.

Hate speech watchdog responds to Jim Jordan's inquiry to 'set the record straight' on alleged censorship

A hate speech watchdog group Republicans have accused of coordinating with the federal government to censor conservatives on social media says GOP lawmakers are mistaken.

The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) responded to an inquiry from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, Thursday, writing in a letter that Republicans "may not have a clear understanding" of the group's mission or work.

Jordan previously sent a letter to CCDH accusing the organization of participating in a "censorship regime" facilitated by the Biden administration with cooperation from social media companies.

"Given the stated purpose of the letter and its requests for documents and information, we fear that the Committee may not have a clear understanding of CCDH’s mission or work," a lawyer representing CCDH wrote in response to the House Judiciary Committee Thursday.

On Aug. 3, Jordan demanded that CCDH turn over documents and communications between the organization and the executive branch and social media companies. Judiciary Republicans also requested information on any and all funds CCDH received from the federal government.

In its response, CCDH explained its status as a non-for-profit 501(c)(3) and non-governmental organization "that seeks to disrupt the architecture of online hate and misinformation." The letter reiterated CCDH's stated mission and highlighted its work with both Republican and Democratic administrations.

The group claimed it has an obligation "to remain nonpolitical and nonpartisan."

The letter also addressed lawmakers' questions over CCDH's funding.

"CCDH is funded entirely by private donors and has never received any grants, entered into any contracts, or received any donations from the United States Government," the letter emphasized.

CCDH's lawyers noted that Jordan's initial Aug. 3 letter was sent on the same day the Judiciary Committee released a press release that cited a lawsuit filed by X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, against the organization. Questioning the timing, the letter said CCDH "will not be dissuaded from pursuing its vital mission by litigation, governmental inquiry, or public pressure."

In the lawsuit filed earlier this month, X Corp. claimed CCDH published "misleading claims" and exaggerated the prevalence of harmful content on X to thwart investment from advertisers.

X Corp. said the "scare campaign" was accomplished by illegally scraping data and cherry-picking inflammatory posts to support the CCDH's thesis about hate speech on the platform.

CCDH CEO Imran Ahmed denied the allegations and stood by his group's claims that hate speech increased on X after Musk bought the platform.

Tourist gang-raped at Spanish resort while attackers filmed assault: report

Five French tourists and one Swiss tourist were arrested after allegedly gang-raping an 18-year-old British woman at a popular tourist destination in Spain.

Spanish Civil Guard police announced the arrests of the French and Swiss tourists Wednesday on the island of Mallorca in the popular tourist town of Calvià, according to a report from The Associated Press.

Police say the alleged rape happened Monday, when they were alerted to the case by the staff of a hotel on the island who had discovered the British woman crying in desperation following the alleged assault.

The alleged victim told police she met the suspected rapists Monday and went to the hotel room of one of the suspects and was subsequently sexually assaulted by all six. Police also said a judge on the case found video clips of the alleged rape on at least one of the suspects' phones.

6 MEN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED GANG RAPE OF TEEN TOURIST AT EUROPEAN VACATION HOTSPOT

The alleged victim, who has not been named by police, received immediate medical attention and counsel, police said, while the six suspects, all reported to be 20 years old, were detained shortly after the incident was reported.

The Civil Guard took the six detainees before a judge in a court in Palma de Mallorca Tuesday, and they continue to be held in jail. None of them have been formally charged, and the investigation is still ongoing. Further details about the suspects and there identities have yet to be released by police.

The incident marks the second case of an alleged gang rape by tourists on the island in a matter of weeks. In mid-July, six young German men were arrested for allegedly gang-raping an 18-year-old German tourist at a hotel on Mallorca.

Don't be tricked by scammers' false promises of slashing your cable bill in half

We recently received a message from Leroy from Conyers, Georgia, who fell victim to a cunning scam targeting cable service Xfinity customers. This cautionary tale serves as a crucial reminder to all of us to stay vigilant and informed about the latest scams.

Here's what he has to share:

"I received a text message supposedly from Xfinity offering to cut my bill in half if I pay for four months in advance, using a Target gift card.

I later received a message that there was a problem with their system. I was asked to call [number removed] to resolve the problem.
I was informed that was a problem with their system and Target cards. I was asked to purchase two e-bay cards for $200.00 each and submit them. I was told if I did this my original $350.00 would be refunded to me via cashier's check overnight. This had to be done within three hours of the time the call took place.

I checked with Xfinity and they knew nothing about this. I contacted Target and informed them of what had transpired. There was nothing they could do, the money was already gone. – Leroy, Conyers, GA"

What happened to Leroy is very unfortunate, and I'm sorry to see another person get tricked by these evil cyber criminals. Let's go over some key tips for how to know if you're being scammed so that you don't fall for one of these nasty tricks.

A key tactic that a scammer will use is trying to convince you that you've won a prize or that you'll be gifted something in exchange for money, which is exactly what happened to Leroy.

They might tell you to purchase gift cards, pay for something in advance, or say you've won a product like a new flatscreen TV, all in exchange for your personal information.

If you receive a text message from a random number and there's a link or some sort of attachment in the message, proceed with caution. Companies like Xfinity often send things about your bill in the mail, not via text or phone.

HOW SCAMMERS ARE POSING AS YOUR CABLE AND INTERNET PROVIDERS

Xfinity has also had incidents where someone will call a victim over the phone and claim to be from the company, offering a similar 50% reduction in a cable bill.

They will ask for your account information to "confirm your identity," and once they have that information, they can do whatever they want with it. Xfinity says they will not call customers over the phone or give you any kind of offer like this unless you call them first. Don't fall for these fake phone calls.

If anyone ever asks you to make a payment with a gift card or to purchase a gift card for them, there's a pretty solid chance that it's a scam. Gift cards are not traceable, and it's a great way for a scammer to take your money and run with no paper trail left behind.

At least if you make a payment with a debit or credit card and it ends up being a scam, your bank or credit card company can help you get refunded.

You should always have your guard up if someone is calling you on the phone or sending you a text message asking for your banking information.

EXPOSING THE TOP SCAMS TARGETING COSTCO SHOPPERS

The scammer might try to convince you that they need it because there's an issue with your account and that handing the information over would fix the problem. You should never give that information to anyone over the phone unless it's the official number of a company you've reached out to.

If you're getting a text message or an email with a malicious link, having antivirus software on your device will make sure you are stopped from clicking on those malicious links or opening any attachments that may install malware on your devices, allowing hackers to gain access to your personal information.

It's an old-fashioned trick, yet there are still people out there who will try to steal your bills right from your mailbox so that they can get some of your information and then try to call you later for more.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE STEPS IN TO ASSIST DEMENTIA PATIENTS WITH HIGH-TECH APPAREL

If you notice that you have a bill missing, contact your provider immediately to get it squared away. I'd also recommend getting a Ring camera or some sort of external security in front of your home so that you can see if anyone steals anything from you.

Leroy's unfortunate experience serves as a cautionary tale for all of us. It highlights the need to remain vigilant against scams.

To avoid falling victim, it is essential to exercise caution with offers, prizes and phone calls, refrain from making payments with gift cards, safeguard banking information, employ antivirus protection, and promptly secure personal information. By doing all of this, you will avoid becoming a victim of one of these sneaky scammers.
