Eating these common foods could reduce Alzheimer's risk, experts say

Reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s could be as simple as eating the right food.

A new study by researchers in Boston, Chicago and Washington, D.C., found that eating foods high in choline could lower the risk of developing the common dementia.

Choline is an essential micronutrient found in various foods, including poultry, dairy products (such as milk, yogurt and eggs), cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts, beans and some fish, according to the USDA.

THE KEY TO LIVING LONGER COULD BE TIED TO A SURPRISING SUBSTANCE, STUDY SUGGESTS

Dietary choline intake has been associated with a lower risk of cognitive function and reduced risk of dementia, the researchers concluded.

In the study, participants averaging 81 years of age who did not have Alzheimer's completed dietary questionnaires and underwent annual neurological exams.

After an eight-year follow-up, researchers determined that consuming about 350 milligrams of choline per day was associated with the lowest risk of clinical Alzheimer’s diagnoses in older adults.

Los Angeles-based registered dietitian nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein has also backed the impact of choline on brain health, citing a 2024 China-based study that found intake improves cognitive function, especially among women.

"This is the study that inspired me to start supplementing choline," she said. "My memory has gotten worse over the years. I first wrote it off as ‘pregnancy brain,’ then ‘mommy brain,’ but eventually realized I should do my best to help it."

"I already sleep well, exercise regularly, play mahjong and limit my alcohol, so choline was the next obvious tool worth trying."

WARDING OFF ALZHEIMER'S MIGHT MEAN MAKING THESE 11 LIFESTYLE CHANGES, EXPERT SAYS

Muhlstein shared that more than 90% of the choline in eggs comes from the yolk. For those who choose to eat egg whites for dietary reasons, taking a choline supplement may be a better option.

Choline intake should be tailored to each person's individual needs, the nutritionist noted, referencing guidance from the Harvard School of Public Health.

"Premenopausal women may have lower requirements for dietary choline, because higher estrogen levels stimulate the creation of choline in the body," the university wrote.

In a separate interview with Fox News Digital, Dr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist, brain imaging doctor and founder of Amen Clinics in California, emphasized the importance of eating the right foods for brain health.

"Your brain uses 20% to 30% of the calories you consume," he said. "So, nutrition is critical to help your brain or hurt your brain."

Walnuts are one of Amen’s favorite brain-healthy food options, as they contain choline as well as omega-3 fatty acids.

He also recommends including wild salmon as a dietary staple, as it's high in omega-3s and healthy protein, as well as organic blueberries and green, leafy vegetables.

"If you had a salad every day, and you put blueberries and salmon and walnuts on it with a little lemon and olive oil, that would be a perfect brain-boosting lunch," he said.

The doctor also suggested considering certain supplements to foster better brain health, including vitamin D, omega-3 or fish oil, or a daily multi-vitamin.

For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health.

"Nearly two-thirds of the American population is low in vitamin D," he said. "And if it's low, it's a universal risk factor for every bad thing related to your brain, but also to your body, including obesity and cancer … Know and optimize your vitamin D level."

New person of interest emerges in documentary on decades-old disappearance of Iowa news anchor

Three decades after an Iowa news anchor vanished without a trace while on her way to work, a documentary has suggested a new person of interest as authorities aim to solve a case that was previously thought to have gone cold.

Brad Millerbernd, the ex-husband of Jodi Huisentruit’s childhood best friend Patty Niemeyer, was investigated by Iowa police after tips suggested he may have been involved in the 1995 abduction of Huisentruit, according to a newly released ABC News documentary titled "Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit."

Niemeyer reportedly revealed her ex-husband matched unreleased police suspect sketches, with Millerbernd living approximately three hours from Huisentruit’s apartment at the time of her disappearance, according to the show.

"It was a very moving experience," Maria Awes, executive producer of the documentary, told Fox News Digital. "Here you have somebody who was extremely close to Jodi, who was in her very tight circle of friends, grew up with her – all of those things. Now, she believes that her own ex-husband may have had something to do with Jodi’s disappearance. To come forward takes an extreme amount of bravery."

FATHER’S PURSUIT FOR MISSING DAUGHTER HEATS UP WITH NEW EVIDENCE IN CASE THAT’S NO LONGER COLD

Millerbernd has maintained his innocence throughout the three-decade-long investigation, and has continued to cooperate with authorities, according to the documentary. Fox News Digital reached out to Millerbernd for comment, but did not receive a response. Police would not confirm or deny whether they have looked at him in connection with the investigation.

20 YEARS AFTER NATALEE HOLLOWAY VANISHED, SUSPECT’S CONFESSION STILL LEAVES QUESTIONS: PI

"MCPD continues to investigate Jodi Huisentruit’s disappearance and hopes that the current information is able to produce useful leads that help bring some closure to the case for the family and our community," Police Chief Jeff Brinkley said in a statement to Fox News Digital. "We have not discussed suspects or persons of interest with the media in the past and do not intend to start doing so now."

Huisentruit vanished on the morning of June 27, 1995, as she was on her way to work as a morning show anchor at local news station KIMT-TV, according to Fox 9. She called a coworker to say she was on her way to the station, but never arrived.

Following the discovery of her belongings and signs of a struggle outside of her Mason City apartment – including a bent key and pair of high heels on the ground near her vehicle – police quickly ruled that Huisentruit was abducted. Additionally, a witness reported seeing a white van in the area and hearing a scream.

DETECTIVES’ TRUE CRIME PODCAST HELPS DIG UP BREAKTHROUGH IN CASE THAT HAUNTED FAMILY: ‘DREW AUDIBLE GASP’

Despite an extensive search, authorities never located Huisentruit and no arrests have been made in her disappearance. She was declared legally dead in 2001.

"We haven't put this down, we haven't stopped working, we have not stopped pursuing leads and information," Brinkley told Fox 9.

Last year, officers searched a property in nearby Winsted, Minnesota, located about 170 miles from Mason City, but did not find anything pertaining to the Huisentruit’s disappearance. Authorities have not released what led police to the property.

A 2017 search warrant tied to the investigation and released earlier this year revealed authorities looked to obtain GPS data from two vehicles connected to a friend of Huisentruit, John Vansice, who has reportedly since passed away, according to Fox 9.

The warrant was for a 1999 Honda Civic and 2013 GMC registered to Vansice. He was one of the last people to see Huisentruit alive and previously stated he had cooperated with local, state and federal investigators, Fox 9 reported.

Despite the countless dead ends, Huisentruit’s family remains hopeful that their daughter will be found 30 years after she vanished.

"The pain and anguish felt by us and all who loved Jodi are immeasurable," Huisentruit’s family said in a statement on the Jodi Hope’s Facebook page on the anniversary of her disappearance. "True peace will only be given to us when Jodi is found and justice is served for her. We know it is hard to have hope for resolution after so many years, but we still choose to hope that one day soon it will happen."

Browns rookie Quinshon Judkins accused of punching woman with ‘closed fist’ as new details in arrest emerge

Cleveland Browns rookie Quinshon Judkins allegedly struck a woman in the mouth with a "closed fist" during a physical altercation that led to his arrest in Florida earlier this month, according to new details.

Judkins, who was drafted by the Browns with the 36th overall pick following a standout season at Ohio State, was arrested by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department over the weekend and charged with battery and domestic violence following an incident that occurred with a romantic partner on July 7.

The couple began arguing after flying into Fort Lauderdale Airport, the NFL Network reported, citing a police report.

The woman claimed that Judkins was seemingly upset over text messages that he received from family members while the pair was waiting for their luggage at baggage claim. The police report did not detail what was said in the text messages, but the woman told law enforcement that she was attempting to dispel whatever was said in the messages.

After getting in their rental car outside the airport, the woman claimed that the argument turned physical.

"The victim stated that the defendant then punched her in the mouth/chin area with a closed fist," the police report read, noting that the woman still had visible bruising on her chin area.

BROWNS ROOKIE QUINSHON JUDKINS ARRESTED IN FLORIDA FOR ALLEGED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The argument continued in the vehicle, and according to the report, the woman at one point sat in the back of the car.

"The victim stated that the defendant turned around while he was driving and struck her additional times in the left arm and leg," the report stated, noting additional bruising in those areas.

The woman contacted the police days later on July 12, telling law enforcement that she did not report the alleged incident immediately because she "felt bad due to the recent success and career of the defendant."

Judkins was released on Sunday after he posted a $2,500 bond. The judge ordered the NFL player not to be in contact with the alleged victim and have no access to firearms.

A Browns spokesman said the team is aware of the incident and gathering more information.

Fox News Digital reached out to Judkins' reps for comment.

‘Peacemaker’ Trump can end Africa’s biggest war, former White House advisor says

Fresh from the success of bringing peace to one African conflict, President Donald Trump and his administration are "uniquely positioned" to end the continent’s other major war in Sudan, according to a leading analyst.

President Trump got the foreign ministers of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda to the White House June 27 to sign a peace deal to end their 30-year war.

Cameron Hudson, a former senior official on Africa in the George W. Bush administration, exclusively told Fox News Digital Trump’s actions on brokering peace in Africa have been "refreshing" and that U.S. involvement in Sudan is essential.

TRUMP AND RUBIO SECURE RWANDA-CONGO PEACE TREATY AMID PAKISTAN'S NOBEL PRIZE NOMINATION

Sudan is often called the forgotten war. An estimated 150,000 have been killed. On Friday, a State Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital a staggering 14.2 million have been displaced since the government and the rebel Rapid Support Forces started the current civil war in April 2023. The spokesperson added "over 30 million people (are) in need of humanitarian assistance, (and) more than 630,000 individuals (are) experiencing catastrophic food insecurity. The suffering in Sudan demonstrates the importance of a swift and durable negotiated end to the conflict."

At a U.N. Security Council briefing Thursday, Ambassador Dorothy Shea, the acting U.S. representative, said, "By many measures, the conflict in Sudan is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today. We call on Sudan’s warring parties to cease hostilities, allow unhindered humanitarian access to all parts of the country and protect civilians."

Shea added, "The United States calls for accountability for the Rapid Support Forces for the genocide in Sudan, where they have murdered men and boys, even infants on an ethnic basis, targeted fleeing civilians and committed acts of brutal sexual violence against women and girls of other ethnic groups."

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), declared aid convoys are being targeted, hospitals bombed and food and water deliberately withheld. RSF rebels reportedly have encircled the city and camps of El Fasher in Darfur and effectively put the area under siege.

Hudson, also a former State Department advisor, told Fox News Digital it’s the moment for President Trump to make his move because he "is rapidly staking out a position for himself as a peacemaker in the world, and this message resonates deeply with African leaders and their publics.

"To the degree that Trump has continued to frame his personal diplomacy in terms of peace, that has been well received. Closer to home, his prioritization of peace in the Congo-Rwanda dispute is seen as genuine.

BIDEN ADMIN SLAMMED FOR ‘WAITING’ TO DECLARE GENOCIDE IN SUDAN

"Africans, by and large, don’t begrudge the president for also having an agenda to secure critical minerals. I think they see his transparency and transactionalism as refreshing from a U.S. president. Washington has a tendency of speaking about our values but pursuing our interests in a contradictory fashion. For Trump, they see his interests as his values."

Looking back at the tsunami of words but lack of definitive action from the previous administration, Hudson added, "If you look at the facts on the ground in Sudan today, this might be the last moment we have to try to walk the country back from the brink of collapse. U.S. involvement now is essential, not just for regional stability but for ensuring the U.S.’s own long-term security interests.

"A failed state of 50 million people on the shores of the Red Sea will disrupt an essential lane of commercial navigation, destabilize partners across the Gulf and send waves of migrants streaming into Europe and Africa. None of this serves Washington’s interests."

Ambassador Shea said at this week’s Security Council briefing the U.S. believes "external support to the warring (Sudanese) parties only serves to prolong the conflict and must cease."

Hudson said the U.S. could — and should — end that support.

"The Trump administration is uniquely positioned to make a difference in Sudan," Hudson said. "The principal backers to the sides in the war — Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey — are all U.S. allies. where President Trump has cultivated close ties and deep influence. He is in a position to help these countries settle their differences and forge a consensus on ending their support for the war. It will take some dedicated diplomacy, but that is the message that he is trying to send, that he is a peacemaker."

"The United States remains focused on working with our partners to resolve the crisis in Sudan," the State Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital Friday. "We support the restoration of civilian governance in a peaceful, unified Sudan. We continue to engage with key regional and other partners to urge the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to cease hostilities, allow unhindered humanitarian access to all parts of the country, protect civilians and take steps toward a negotiated peace through inclusive dialogue."

Jewish group slams Democratic NYC mayoral hopeful over 'sick' mockery of 'sacred' traditions

A Jewish advocacy group is blasting Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani for sharing a video mocking Hanukkah Jewish traditions on social media.

The organization, Stop Antisemitism, says Mamdani posted the "sick" video to his X account last year. The video is originally from the Geeta Brothers Duet Group, a satirical and comedic duo who dressed themselves in stereotypical Jewish garb for the performance.

"Zohran Mamdani posts Indian men cosplaying Jews, spinning dreidels and lighting the menorah," Stop Antisemitism wrote in a statement on X.

"Our holidays and traditions are sacred and not for your comedic pleasure, Zohran Mamdani – this is sick," the group added, tagging the mayoral candidate.

TOP DEMOCRATS, MEDIA DEMAND ZOHRAN MAMDANI CONDEMN 'GLOBALIZE THE INTIFADA' PHRASE

Mamdani had posted the video in December 2024, adding the caption, "Happy 3rd night of Hanukkah from Astoria and Long Island City."

The video originates from the 2015 parody album "Punjabi Christmas Album Hits" from the Geeta Brothers.

Mamdani posted another video from the same album on Christmas Eve, this one based on "Jingle Bells."

"Wishing you all a very merry Christmas from Astoria and Long Island City," he wrote at the time.

Mamdani's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

Accusations of antisemitism have harried Mamdani's campaign from its outset. The self-proclaimed democratic socialist has refused multiple times to recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state, and he has supported the BDS movement against Israel.

"I believe Israel has a right to exist," he said during a mayoral primary debate in June.

"As a Jewish state?" the moderator pressed.

"As a state with equal rights," Mamdani said.

He later elaborated on his opposition to Israel being a Jewish state in an interview with Fox 5.

"I’m not comfortable supporting any state that has a hierarchy of citizenship on the basis of religion or anything else," he said.

DAVE RUBIN WARNS JEWS TO 'GET THE HELL OUT' OF NYC IF MAMDANI BECOMES MAYOR

Mamdani, a Muslim, has also faced criticism for refusing to condemn the phrase "globalize the intifada."

StopAntisemitism founder Liora Rez argued last week that electing Mamdani mayor would not only be "catastrophic" for Jewish residents, but all who reside in the city.

"If Zohran Mamdani was elected as mayor, it would be hands down catastrophic for Jewish residents of New York City," Rez told Fox News Digital. "And we would even take it a step further where citizens of New York City in general, due to his very troubling stances on socialism, would greatly suffer as well."

"I think individuals who are concerned that Zohran Mamdani is antisemitic have every single right to be concerned considering his past behavior," Rez added. "We can list dozens of examples of his past antisemitic adjacent and direct antisemitic actions."

Amateur baseball player makes ingenious play to avoid potential double play

You never know what you might see on a baseball field

Duluth Huskies third baseman Ethan Surowiec fielded a groundball, as a baserunner, during the team’s 5-4 win over the La Crosse Loggers on Tuesday at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minnesota

The bases were loaded in the bottom of the inning with one out, and the Huskies were up to bat. Surowiec was the runner on second base when a ground ball was hit to Loggers shortstop Mikey Ryan III.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

After the ball was hit, Surowiec took a couple of steps to his right and fielded the ball himself, like a shortstop, instead of letting it through to the actual shortstop, Ryan, to avoid a potential double-play.

"Oh my goodness, I have never seen that on a baseball field," the announcer said.

"Ethan Surowiec picked up the baseball (and) purposefully gave himself up."

The umpires deemed the play a "fielder’s choice 6," which allowed for the bases to remain loaded. The runner on third base remained, while the runner on first base advanced to second base, and the batter went to first base.

Surowiec’s quick-thinking gave the Huskies a chance to capitalize, as giving himself up allowed the inning to continue.

DODGERS BROADCASTER OREL HERSHISER BRINGS UP ASTROS SIGN-STEALING SCANDAL IN HOUSTON'S HISTORIC ROUT OVER LA

However, according to the Baseball Rules Academy, the umpires got the call wrong. Rule 6.01(a)(6) states that both Surowiec and the batter should have been ruled out.

"If, in the judgment of the umpire, a baserunner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpire shall call the runner out for interference and also call out the batter-runner because of the action of his teammate. In no event may bases be run or runs scored because of such action by a runner," the rule states, accordiong to the Baseball Rules Academy

If the umpires had enforced the rule according to what the Baseball Rules Academy stated, both Surowiec and the batter would have been called out to end the inning.

Surowiec’s seemingly ingenious play would have resulted in the same outcome he was trying to prevent: an inning-ending double play. His deliberate play to interfere with the baseball ended up as a moot point, as designated hitter Paul Gutierrez Contreras then hit a flyout to right field and stranded the three runners.

The Huskies improved to 3-1 with the win, and they sit atop the Great Plans East division in the Northwoods League, while the Loggers fell to 2-2 with the loss.

'Old people smell' is real, experts say — here's how to avoid it as you age

Many people have posted on social media about the so-called "old people smell," described as a faintly musty or greasy scent sometimes associated with older adults

This phenomenon is more science than stigma, experts say.

"I think we all know this smell," Dr. Dan Wesson, professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine, told Fox News Digital.

ALZHEIMER'S RATES HAVE REACHED STAGGERING NUMBER AS EXPERTS CALL FOR CHANGE

"Some describe it as dusty, like an old book. Others as oily or greasy. None of these, of course, are flattering descriptions, and that's why this isn't the kind of smell you want to label a person with," he noted.

The skin is the largest organ in the body, so it makes sense that it will undergo significant changes as the body ages, according to Wesson.

For most of our lives, body odor stems from sweat, bacteria and dead skin, which can be addressed with basic hygiene. But with aging, changes in skin composition and oil production make smells more complex, the expert noted.

"Skin cells accumulate damage over time," he said — and those damaged cells can release compounds that contribute to odor.

HIGHER DEMENTIA RISK SEEN IN WOMEN WITH COMMON HEALTH ISSUE

A key culprit is 2-nonenal, a compound that emerges from lipid oxidation, which is the process of fats in the cells breaking down due to imbalances in the body, studies show.

This compound is unique to aging skin and has a greasy, cardboard-like odor.

2-nonenal is not easily washed off with regular hygiene practices, "by nature of its fatty composition," Wesson said.

"This is why managing this body odor requires more complex solutions," he said.

Wesson suggests taking a more holistic approach by eating antioxidant-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, staying hydrated and using antioxidant skincare.

Some medications — including those for high cholesterol, ADHD or depression — could also impact the body's metabolism and how much it sweats, contributing to odor, according to Wesson.

Hormones can also influence how people smell. Post-menopausal women often experience changes in skin and scent due to declining estrogen levels, studies show.

"Hormone replacement therapy can ward off some changes that may alter body odor – though [HRT] is not without risks and should be discussed carefully with your doctor," Wesson said.

Not all odor changes are normal, experts warn.

"A sudden change in body odor can be a warning sign of an underlying health issue," Wesson warned.

Diseases like cancer and dementia, for example, can alter body chemistry and scent.

"If your loved ones report a sudden change, you should consult your doctor," Wesson advised.

Some people may worry about how they smell even when others wouldn’t notice. That concern could stem from parosmia, a distorted sense of smell, or olfactory hallucinations, where unpleasant smells are imagined.

"People can perceive odors that aren’t there at all," Wesson said. "It’s important to consider whether it’s a real odor or just a change in perception."

For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health

By understanding the biology behind age-related odor and taking a proactive approach to health and skincare, this condition can be managed, experts say.

'Antisemitic' British band banned from US after viral 'death to the IDF' festival chants

The State Department has revoked the visas for members of the Bob Vylan band, after the British punk-rap duo called for "death to the IDF" during a Saturday performance in England's Glastonbury Music Festival.

The band Bob Vylan, made up of two musicians with the stage names Bobby Vylan and Bobbie Vylan, is slated to tour the U.S. later in 2025. But the State Department announced Monday it had pulled the visas for the band’s members after the group led chants calling for the end of the Israel Defense Forces

"Bob Vylan’s visas have been revoked," a senior State Department official told Fox News Digital Monday. "The Secretary of State has been clear — the U.S. will not approve visas for terrorist sympathizers."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously has issued multiple warnings that the State Department will rescind visas for "terrorists" and those affiliated with them.

For example, Rubio said in June 2 X post after the antisemitic terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, that all "terrorists, their family members, and terrorist sympathizers" in the U.S. on a visa would have their visa revoked and face deportation.

During the Glastonbury, England, performance, Bobby Vylan also led the crowd with chants of "Free, Free, Free Palestine," and wrapped up the chant saying "Hell yeah, from the river to the sea. Palestine must be, will be inshallah, it will be free."

In response, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that "there is no excuse for this kind of appalling hate speech," according to the BBC.

Meanwhile, Bobby Vylan appeared to double down on his statements during the Glastonbury performance, and wrote in a social media post Sunday: "I said what I said."

"It is incredibly important that we encourage and inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us," Bobby Vylan said in a Sunday Instagram post. "Let us display to them loudly and visibly the right thing to do when we want and need change. Let them see us marching in the streets, campaigning on ground level, organizing online and shouting about it on any and every stage that we are offered."

Additionally, the BBC issued a Monday statement apologizing for continuing to air Bob Vylan’s performance live, and condemned the antisemitic chants during the performance.

"The team were dealing with a live situation but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen," the BBC said in a Monday statement. "The BBC respects freedom of expression but stands firmly against incitement to violence. The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves."
