Parents 'baffled' after school asks students to choose from dozens of pronouns: 'Very confused and upset'

Parents looking to apply for their children to attend a school in England must fill out an admission form that includes 42 different gender pronouns, according to a report. 

"When you see something like this, it just makes you not want to take them seriously as an education establishment," one parent told The Sun, adding that "children don’t just need this kind of thing." 

"I spoke to other parents whose children are supposed to be starting at New Mills later this year, and they were equally as baffled by it," the parent said. "It left my son very confused and upset."

Leadership at the New Mills School, in Derbyshire, said the form was standard and in use by "thousands of schools." The form includes the terms zie, zim, zir, zis and zieself, as well as ve, ver, vis, vers and verself, among others.

"They are at such a tender age, and you want them to be children as long as possible," the parent said. 

New Mills School previously made headlines over its "Drag ‘n’ Rainbows" non-uniform day, which drew so much controversy the school canceled it. 

Gender identity has increasingly taken focus in education discussions in Britain. The Scottish government in August 2021 released a guidance outline for supporting transgender pupils in schools, arguing that it ensures "every child and young person is happy, safe, respected and included in their learning environment."

"The health and well-being of every child and young person must be at the heart of our decision-making," Shirley-Anne Somerville, Scottish cabinet secretary for education and skills, wrote. 

"I am confident that this guidance, combined with our forthcoming work on gender equality, will help schools deliver a learning environment where privacy, safety, dignity and respect is afforded to every pupil so they can each achieve their full potential," she added. 

Suella Braverman, the British home secretary, made a speech last year to the think tank Policy Exchange while serving as the government’s attorney general, during which she said schools had no legal obligation to comply with the gender preference of their pupils and could refuse to allow transgender children to wear the uniform or use the toilet of their stated gender.

A principal at a secondary school in Essex told The Guardian he didn’t understand why politicians felt the need to weigh in "on my school toilets… on our uniform policy" when there were other issues he felt needed more immediate attention. 

"Sort out the rocketing electricity bills and the cost of living," Vic Goddard, principal of Passmores Academy, a secondary school, said. "Don’t get involved in small decisions you don’t add value to."

Kamala Harris claims her goddaughters friends' are basing college choices on state abortion laws

During a Tuesday interview with MSNBC’s Joy Reid, Vice President Kamala Harris outlined the plight of women needing abortions one year after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, mentioning that young women are choosing college based on where they can still get an abortion.

Harris mentioned her own goddaughter telling her that her friends are researching which states have strict abortion bans and those that don’t in order to make a decision on which college to attend.

The vice president offered the anecdote as she criticized states restricting the procedure.

Harris made the claims during a special Roe v. Wade retrospective on MSNBC's "The ReidOut." The segment, titled, "One Year Post-Roe: A Special with Vice President Harris," captured the pro-choice lawmaker’s perspective on the issue just days ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court decision to overturn the 1973 abortion ruling.

Harris began by remarking on the year-old ruling, framing it as the Supreme Court removing rights from women. She said, "And the idea that the highest court in our land just did that and rolled back rights that had been recognized was incredibly shocking."

She added that upon hearing the news last June, she called her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, so she could vent to him with "words not meant for television at this moment."

After Harris and Reid laughed at the candid admission of anger, Harris became serious and mentioned the thought of individuals who have to "suffer in silence" because of the court’s ruling. She added she was "angry and sad" upon thinking about that. 

Later in the interview, Harris mentioned some of the young women whose lives are being affected by the ruling, namely recent high school graduates who now allegedly have more limited options when picking colleges. 

She mentioned her goddaughter calling her when Roe v. Wade was overturned and telling her, "Do you know what’s happening? My friends – whatever gender – are starting decision about where they will go to college depending on what’s happening in that state."

Harris added her own perspective, saying, "Because of course, if you look at it, I think the number is something like 23 million women of reproductive age live in states that have banned abortion, and what that is gonna mean for those 23 million for the myriad of health care issues that are at stake as we have just been discussing."

She added, "It’s having a real impact on all types of decisions that people are able to make."

How to know if your sunscreen is expired

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has regulations that require commercial sunscreens to have stable formulations that last for at least three years, it can be tricky to know whether your SPF has reached its end.

Consumers who have purchased FDA-approved sunscreens can expect to find expiration date labels printed right on the product’s packaging.

For lotion tubes and bottles, the manufacturer’s production year and day are typically written in an alphanumeric code that can appear at the top or bottom of the container. The first two numbers represent the year the sunscreen was made while the next three numbers represent the calendar day.

Expiration dates, on the other hand, are usually a bit clearer with an "EXP" marker followed by the month and year a sunscreen should go bad.

Production date codes and expiration dates are also printed onto spray-on sunscreens and can usually be found at the base of the bottle.

Sunscreens from other countries, which have become trendier in recent years due to e-commerce, are usually regulated by agencies from their place of origin and will need to be reached by the consumers.

For example, the European Commission that represents the EU has its own list of testing, efficacy and labeling standards while individual countries throughout Asia, Africa, Australia and North and South America have regulations that may classify sunscreens as either a cosmetic or over-the-counter drug. 

Aside from keeping an eye out for expiration labels, consumers should take note of how they’re storing their sunscreen and the product’s consistency, according to the FDA.

"To keep your sunscreen in good condition, the FDA recommends that sunscreen containers should not be exposed to direct sun," an FDA spokesperson told Fox News Digital via email. 

"Protect the sunscreen by wrapping the containers in towels or keeping them in the shade," the spokesperson added. "Sunscreen containers can also be kept in coolers while outside in the heat for long periods of time."

Dr. Anna Guanche, founder and director of Bella Skin Institute in Calabasas, California, warns that hot indoor settings can impact a sunscreen’s effectiveness.

"Sunscreen most certainly does expire and when it does, it loses its strength and is less effective at blocking UV rays," Guanche wrote to Fox News Digital. 

"If the sunscreen has been left in a hot car for a long period of time, for example, or separated it is best to invest in a new bottle of sunscreen just in case," she added.

Consumers should be able to find proper storage and use instructions listed on sunscreen labels, according to the FDA.

"There is no expiration difference between the face or body sunscreen. Expired is expired. Although expiration dates are guidelines, it is best not to take a chance of having ineffective sun protection," Guanche advised. 

"Lotions versus spray is the same," she added. "You want to check the expiration date on the bottle because if it’s expired, it loses its effectiveness of protecting your skin."

In addition to being mindful of expiration dates, you may want to look into whether a recall has been issued for sunscreen products that were purchased last summer or before.

In 2022, Banana Boat voluntarily recalled four batches of the Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30, FOX Business reported at the time. The recall had been issued after the company discovered some samples of the product contained trace levels of benzene – an organic chemical compound that can cause cancer with high exposure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In July 2021, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. issued a voluntary recall affecting a handful of the sunscreen products in its aerosol product line.

The company had recalled select sunscreens from Neutrogena and Aveeno for potential benzene contamination.

Benzene was reportedly not an ingredient lists in Johnson & Johnson sunscreen products, FOX Business and Reuters reported at the time.

Benzene was found in four Neutrogena products: Beach Defense, Cool Dry Sport, Invisible Daily Defense and Ultra Sheer products. It was also found in one Aveeno product: Aveeno Protect + Refresh sunscreen. 

Johnson & Johnson and Costco Wholesale Corp. had reached a tentative agreement over lawsuits in connection with the recalled sunscreens after benzene was detected in the products.

GOP rips Hunter's 'sweetheart' plea deal on tax and gun crimes zero in on Joe Biden

Hunter Biden will plead guilty to two tax violations and one gun felony in what Republicans are blasting as a "sweetheart" plea deal following a five-year investigation.

Fox News has confirmed that the president's son will plead guilty to two counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax and one count of possession of a firearm by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.

"It’s no coincidence that less than a week after President Trump is arraigned by the DOJ, Hunter Biden is pleading guilty to a sweetheart deal with no jail time," Senator Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told Fox News Digital in a statement. "The DOJ is going for the low-hanging fruit by charging Hunter Biden with a gun felony and two tax misdemeanors, after years of slow walking their investigation."

"For AG Garland to maintain his mantra that there is one standard of justice is pathetic," Blackburn continued. "If the DOJ thinks this dismisses the $5 million alleged bribery scheme or the years of reported Biden family corruption, they are mistaken. We will not allow full accountability to fall by the wayside."

HUNTER BIDEN AGREES TO PLEAD GUILTY IN FEDERAL TAX, GUN CASE

The first son has been under federal investigation since 2018, which began amid the discovery of suspicious activity reports (SARs) regarding funds from "China and other foreign nations." 

The firearms charge stemmed from allegations that Hunter Biden lied during a gun purchase in 2018. 

Republicans have accused Hunter of selling President Biden’s influence overseas during his vice presidency.

"America has 2 million people incarcerated right now," Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., told Fox News Digital. "We have six thousand jails. We could have found a place for Hunter. But the truth is, nobody really cares about Hunter Biden. Hunter was a rookie influence peddler and a troubled young man selling access to his Dad. He’s a part of the Biden Crime Family, but he’s not the Big Guy, he wasn’t the VP, and he’s not the inaugurated President."

"House Oversight Committee Republicans know what our job is. We’re focused on The Big Guy, Joe Biden," he added.

"This is deflection, deflection, deflection," Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., told Fox News Digital. "Hunter Biden has been involved in more serious crimes and this plea deal creates an illusion that justice has been served—it hasn’t." 

The news of the charges against Hunter Biden came one week after Former President Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential front-runner, was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to 37 federal felony charges in a classified records case. 

"We have a very clear picture right now of what it looks like when the Biden DOJ goes after someone it wants to take down," Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., told Fox News Digital. "This is clearly not that."

"Let’s be clear: the Department of Justice’s charges against President Biden’s son Hunter reveal a two-tiered system of justice," House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., said in a statement. 

"Hunter Biden is getting away with a slap on the wrist when growing evidence uncovered by the House Oversight Committee reveals the Bidens engaged in a pattern of corruption, influence peddling, and possibly bribery," Comer said. "These charges against Hunter Biden and sweetheart plea deal have no impact on the Oversight Committee’s investigation. We will not rest until the full extent of President Biden’s involvement in the family’s schemes are revealed."

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., called Attorney General Merrick Garland a "disgrace."

"Let's be clear: if anyone without the Biden last name engaged in even a fraction of Hunter's misconduct, they'd face real consequences," Cotton tweeted.

"Biden's son got a sweetheart deal for laundering money, accepting millions in bribes, committing gun crimes, and evading taxes & child support," the senator added. "Yet DOJ targeted a pro-life pastor w/ a 25-person SWAT team and serious charges. AG Garland is a disgrace."

Trump compared the charges to a traffic ticket on his TruthSocial site.

"Wow! The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden a mere ‘traffic ticket.’ Our system is BROKEN!" Trump wrote.

John Yoo, a former deputy assistant attorney general under the Bush administration, told Fox News Digital: "We will still need to see all the facts, but if this plea bargain ends the Justice Department’s investigation into any influence peddling by the Biden family, it will only reinforce the perception that the administration is treating Trump and Biden differently. It will fall to Congress to continue investigating the allegations of improper foreign payments to Hunter Biden and others."

The Republican National Committee tweeted: "It is clear that Joe Biden's Department of Justice is offering Hunter Biden a sweetheart deal. Does anyone think the DOJ would ever offer this to an American who wasn't related to Joe Biden?"

"This is the epitome of the politicization and Weaponization of Joe Biden’s Department of Justice as they give a slap on the wrist to President Biden’s son – a tax fraud and corrupt pay-to-play criminal," Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., told Fox News Digital. 

"It’s never been more clear that we have a two tiered system of justice when you have the son of the sitting President of the United States selling our country out to the highest bidder, laundering money, committing tax fraud, accepting bribes, illegally obtaining a firearm, and shamefully avoiding child support," she continued. "House Republicans will not rest until the full illegal corruption of the Biden Crime Family is exposed. Joe Biden must and will be held accountable."

The White House reacted to the charges Tuesday morning. 

"The President and First Lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life," White House spokesperson Ian Sams said in a statement. "We will have no further comment."

Operation underway: Timeline of OceanGate's missing Titanic tour submarine and the mission to save its crew

News of OceanGate Expedition's missing submarine exploded on Monday as the U.S. and Canadian coast guards sprang into action with search and rescue missions.

Here is the timeline of how OceanGate's Titan submersible went missing during its descent to the wreckage of the Titanic.

JUNE 17: U.K. billionaire Hamish Harding, one of the tourists aboard the missing sub, posts to Facebook one day before the sub is set to begin its descent.

"Due to the worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023," Harding wrote "A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow. We started steaming from St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada yesterday and are planning to start dive operations around 4am tomorrow morning. Until then we have a lot of preparations and briefings to do."

LIVE UPDATES: SEARCH FOR OCEANGATE’S TITAN SUBMARINE 

JUNE 18: Harding boards the submersible alongside Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son Sulaiman Dawood, 19. OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush also boards the submersible, as well as an OceanGate pilot whose identity has not been confirmed.

Critically, the crew are sealed into the vehicle with 17 bolts, and it cannot be opened from the inside. The craft has enough stored oxygen to keep the crew alive for 96 hours.

The Titan then departs the Polar Prince mothership Sunday morning and begins its descent over the wreckage of the Titanic. The ship loses contact with the submersible 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive.

JUNE 19: At an unknown time, OceanGate sounds the alarm from the Polar Prince that the submersible has gone missing.

Immediately, the U.S. Coast Guard Northeast diverts a C-130 aircraft already in the area to begin searching the ocean surface. The Titan is designed to automatically surface in the event of a technical failure. If it is on the surface, rescuers must reach it within the 96-hour window to unseal the vehicle and release the crew.

Some failure may have caused the vehicle to remain stuck underwater. Rescue Coordination Center Halifax in Canada also delivers a P8-Poseidon aircraft, which is capable of dropping sonar buoys that can search underwater.

The U.S. and Canadian coast guards also dispatch more aircraft to the search area, located 900 miles off the U.S. northeast coast.

During this time, Harding's stepson, Brian Szasz, confirms that Harding is on board the submersible in a statement on social media.

JUNE 20: Rescuers have been searching for roughly 48 hours and have covered 10,000 square miles of ocean, with no sign of the missing submersible.

Engro Corp. confirms that Dawood and his son are aboard the submersible in addition to Harding. OceanGate also confirms that CEO Rush is on board.

"All that we know so far is that contact was lost with their submersible craft," Engro wrote at the time. "There is limited information available beyond this that we know, and we humbly request that speculation and theorization is avoided."

Meanwhile, rescue efforts are ongoing as the U.S. Coast Guard reaches out to both the U.S. Navy and the private sector for assistance. A commercial pipe-laying ship arrives to the area. Rescuers hope it will allow them to search depths of up to 3,800 meters after an unsuccessful night.

JUNE 20, 1 p.m. ET: The U.S. Coast Guard will offer an update on the latest rescue efforts.

3 men convicted in US trial that scrutinized China's 'Operation Fox Hunt' repatriation campaign

Three men were convicted of various charges Tuesday in a trial showcasing U.S. claims that China has engineered pressure campaigns on American soil to bully expatriates into returning home, part of an effort called "Operation Fox Hunt."

American private investigator Michael McMahon and two Chinese citizens living in the U.S. — Zheng Congying and Zhu Yong — all were accused of taking part in scare tactics aimed at a former Chinese official. He was living quietly in New Jersey, and Beijing wanted him back.

Zhu was convicted of acting as an illegal foreign agent, stalking, interstate stalking conspiracy and conspiring to act as an illegal foreign agent. Zheng was convicted of stalking and stalking conspiracy but acquitted of the other charges.

McMahon was convicted of all except conspiracy to act as a foreign agent.

The Brooklyn federal court trial was the first to result from a spate of U.S. prosecutions scrutinizing China’s Operation Fox Hunt, a nearly decade-old initiative that Beijing characterizes as a pursuit of fugitives from justice. U.S. authorities view it, at least sometimes, as an exercise in "transnational repression," or deploying government operatives to harass, threaten and silence critics living abroad.

China has denied trying to force repatriations through intimidation and says the U.S. is maligning an effort to fight crime.

Prosecutors say pressure from Beijing was brought to bear in suburban New Jersey, where former Wuhan city official Xu Jin and his family moved in 2010. China has accused him and wife Liu Fang of taking bribes; they deny it and say they were targeted because he got crosswise with China’s Communist power structure.

According to prosecutors, Zhu, Zheng and McMahon took part in a years long, multipronged effort to goad Xu into going back to China. The country couldn’t officially compel him to do so, as it has no extradition treaty with the U.S.

The defense acknowledged that Zhu, Zheng and McMahon took various actions but said the three had no idea that Beijing was allegedly behind it all.

McMahon said he was "devastated by the verdict," insisting that all he had done was his job as a private investigator.

BIDEN CLAIMS SPY BALLOON WAS 'MORE EMBARRASSING' FOR CHINA, SUGGESTS IT WASN'T 'INTENTIONAL'

"If I had known for one second that they were a foreign country, a foreign government, hiring me, I would never have worked the case. I would have notified the FBI," McMahon said. His lawyer, Lawrence Lustberg, said he would challenge the conviction and was confident that "this injustice will not survive the scrutiny that the legal system will give it."

Zheng and Zhu left court without speaking to reporters. Messages seeking comment were sent to their attorneys.

McMahon, a former New York City police sergeant, conducted surveillance and data searches to smoke out Xu’s carefully guarded address and information about his loved ones. Zhu, a retiree who also goes by Jason Zhu and Yong Zhu, helped hire McMahon and equip him with details to get started.

Zheng later went to Xu’s home and left an ominous note: "If you are willing to go back to the mainland and spend 10 years in prison, your wife and children will be all right. That’s the end of this matter!"

"Before I saw this, I felt that the threats from the Chinese Communist Party was only a mental threat to me. However, when I saw that note, I realized that it had become a physical threat," Xu testified, through a court interpreter.

The defense said McMahon, Zheng and Zhu were told they were helping to collect a debt or achieve some other end for a company or individuals — not for China.

"They were used, cheated, misguided by a foreign government to work for them," Zhu’s attorney, Kevin Tung, said in a closing argument.

But Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Heeren said the three "agreed to participate in something that went way, way over the line ... a line that all three defendants knew they were crossing."

The trial unfolded at a fraught time in U.S.-China relations. The two powers have been at odds in recent years over a growing list of issues: trade, industrial espionage, human rights, Taiwan, the South China Sea, Russia’s war against Ukraine, U.S. allegations of Chinese spying, and Washington’s claims that Beijing is tracking and harassing dissidents overseas.

The two nations said they made some progress toward improving relations in recent days, when U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Beijing for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and top diplomats. But it remains unclear whether the countries will be able to bridge their biggest divides, and Blinken said he left empty-handed on a key request: better military-to-military communication.

China announced Operation Fox Hunt in July 2014 as an effort to go after corrupt officials and criminals who had fled the country. However, Beijing’s wanted list has included people whose political and cultural views conflicted with those of China’s ruling Communist Party.

U.S. prosecutors have brought several criminal cases involving alleged Operation Fox Hunt endeavors. In one, a pregnant U.S. citizen was held in China for eight months and pressured to persuade her mother to return to the country, prosecutors said.

Zheng, McMahon and Zhu were charged alongside eight other people also accused of harassing Xu, the former Wuhan official. Three have pleaded guilty; five are believed to be in China.

Prosecutors said the arm-twisting included derogatory Facebook messages to friends of Xu’s adult daughter and an onslaught of letters to a relative in New Jersey.

At one point, a Chinese prosecutor even flew Xu’s unwilling, octogenarian father to New Jersey to lean on his son to return to their homeland, according to prosecutors and trial testimony.

American woman pushed down 165-foot ravine at German castle released from hospital

The 22-year-old American tourist who was pushed down a 165-foot ravine in an attack that resulted in the death her friend near the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany has been released from the hospital officials said Monday. 

The 22-year-old woman was attempting to stop a 30-year-old Michigan man from allegedly assaulting her 21-year-old friend after he lured them onto a secluded trail that led to the Marienbruecke, or Marien Bridge, viewpoint.

The younger of the two friends was also pushed down the steep slope after the man allegedly attempted to sexually assault her.

The names of the victims and suspect have not been released due to German privacy laws. 

The pair landed near each other after falling some 165 feet down the Pöllat Gorge.

"The younger of the two women was attacked by the suspect," police spokesman Holger Stabik said following the Wednesday attack. "The older one tried to rush to her aid, was then choked by the suspect and subsequently pushed down a slope."

A mountain rescue team responded to the incident and reached the women near the bottom of the gorge shortly after the attack. 

The 22-year-old was "responsive" and taken to a hospital, while her friend was life-flighted by helicopter to a separate hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The suspect has been arrested and is being held on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and attempted sexual assault.

German police have asked that anyone with knowledge, footage or pictures of the incident contact the police through a website set up specifically to obtain additional information on the attack. 

Stabik said German authorities have received some two dozen photos and videos relating to the alleged attack. 

Prosecutors have said the women did not know the man who attacked them.

The investigation remains ongoing and a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office, Thomas Hörmann, said it could be three to four months before an indictment is issued.

Europe breaks against puberty blockers as US becomes 'outlier' in defending treatments for transgender minors

Several countries in Europe are now discouraging giving puberty blockers to children as the "outlier" U.S. continues to defend the treatment, according to a new report.

The United Kingdoms National Health Service limited the use of puberty blockers for clinical research this month, according to its website, citing "significant uncertainties surrounding the use of hormone treatments."

"We are now going out to targeted stakeholder testing on an interim clinical commissioning policy proposing that, outside of a research setting, puberty suppressing hormones should not be routinely commissioned for children and adolescents who have gender incongruence/dysphoria," the UK's NHS website reads. 

The U.S. medical community largely believes the science behind transgender medical treatments is settled, according to the Wall Street Journal, writing, "The U.S. is becoming an outlier among many Western nations in the way its national medical institutions treat children suffering from distress over gender identity."

INDIANA GOV. HOLCOMB GREENLIGHTS TRANS PROCEDURE BAN FOR MINORS

Delegates at the American Medical Association's annual meeting recently backed a resolution co-sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and others that renewed their support for treatments such as puberty blockers, the outlet reported.

Countries such as Canada, Australia and Spain still allow puberty blockers, according to the Journal, but some are sounding the alarm. 

The president of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society wrote a letter to Italy's prime minister Giorgia Meloni in January about having "serious concerns" over the use of puberty blockers. 

GOP lawmakers repeatedly cited European studies during a recent congressional hearing, including Texas Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw, who demanded answers from Yale School of Medicine assistant professor Meredithe McNamara, a Democratic witness, about studies that support these treatments for minors.

"If you're doing a therapy, and it's, you know, temporary, fine, whatever, maybe let's try it and see if it works," he continued. "But when you're talking about permanent physiological changes, do you not agree, just from an ethical standpoint, that you might want extremely strong evidence of the benefits? There's no systematic review that states that there's strong evidence of benefits."

"Sir, are you aware of how the quality evidence grading system works and how it's applied?" McNamara responded, failing to name specific studies after the two went back and forth. 

"You're not telling me any study, don't say 'standards of care,'" Crenshaw said. "Tell me one."

"So, um, the standards of care," McNamara said.

"The standards of care," Crenshaw questioned. "That's not a journal, that's not a study. That's not an organization. That's not an institution. You're just saying words. Name one study."

Several states have enacted laws banning the use of puberty blockers for minors. A judge in Indiana recently blocked a law prohibiting puberty blockers and hormone treatments for children that was set to take effect on July 1.

Cardinals' World Series hero David Freese declines invitation to team's Hall of Fame

David Freese, the hero of the 2011 World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals, stunningly declined the invitation to be inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame.

Fans chose Freese in the online voting for this year’s class. On Saturday, the Cardinals said Freese recently informed the team he wanted to withdraw his candidacy.

"This is something that I have given an extreme amount of thought to, humbly, even before the voting process began. I am aware of the impact I had helping the team bring great memories to the city I grew up in, including the 11th championship, but this honor means more to me," Freese said in a statement.

Freese was the MVP of the 2011 World Series and National League Championship Series. He had three home runs in the NLCS victory over the Milwaukee Brewers and then had seven RBI in the World Series against the Texas Rangers. He hit the walk-off home run in Game 6 to extend the series and was 1-for-2 with two RBI in the deciding Game 7.

"I’m especially sorry to the fans that took the time to cast their votes. Cardinal Nation is basically the reason why I’ve unfortunately waited so long for this decision and made it more of a headache for so many people. I feel strongly about my decision and understand how people might feel about this. I get it. I’ll wear it. Thank you for always being there for me, and I am excited to be around the Cardinals as we move forward."

He spent five years in St. Louis. He hit .286 with a .783 OPS and 44 home runs. He was an All-Star for the only time in his career in 2012. He would leave the team after the 2013 season.

"Although we are disappointed that David has declined to be inducted into our Hall of Fame, we respect his decision and look forward to celebrating his great Cardinals career in other ways going forward," Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III said in a statement. "He is always welcome at Busch Stadium."

NASAs Juno spacecraft captures photo of lightning glow on Jupiter during close fly-by of gas giant world

NASA has begun to release photos taken by the spacecraft Juno during its 31st close flyby of Jupiter in late 2020. 

A photo released Thursday shows a vortex near the gas giant’s north pole with an observable glow from a bolt of lightning. 

The agency noted that lightning bolts on Jupiter, much like they do on Earth, occur in clouds containing an ammonia-water solution and are seen most often near the poles. 

The lightning photo was captured as Juno was completing its 31st close flyby of Jupiter on Dec. 30, 2020. Citizen scientist Kevin M. Gill processed the image from raw data from the JunoCam instrument aboard the spacecraft in 2022.

When the lightning photo was taken, the spacecraft was nearly 20,000 miles above Jupiter’s cloud tops, at a latitude of 78 degrees while approaching the planet. 

Juno’s orbits will move closer to Jupiter in the coming months as the spacecraft passes over the giant planet’s nightside, NASA said. 

Juno has performed more than 50 flybys of Jupiter and flown more than 510 million miles. It arrived at Jupiter on July 4, 2016, with the first science flyby occurring 53 days later.
