Missouri head coach ‘bothered’ by CFP committee citing Jordan Travis' injury in playoff decision

Add Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz to the list of people around college football who were bothered by Florida State being left out of the College Football Playoff. 

The Seminoles were selected behind Michigan, Washington, Texas and Alabama on Sunday, missing out on the CFP despite going 13-0 and winning the ACC title. 

The snub set off a title wave of criticism from people around the sport, as an undefeated Power 5 conference champion has never missed out on the playoffs.

The committee cited the season-ending injury to Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis as the reason why the Seminoles were not one of the four best teams at the end of the season, despite Mike Norvell’s team defeating in-state rival Florida and then 10-win Louisville in the ACC Championship Game with backup quarterbacks.

"Florida State is a different team without Jordan Travis," CFP selection committee chair Boo Corrigan said. "One of the things we do consider is player availability, and our job is to rank the best teams, and in the final decision looking at that, it was Alabama at 4 and Florida State at 5."

Drinkwitz discussed the CFP selection committee’s decision to leave out Florida State due to the injury to Travis.

"If we’re going to really have hard conversations, let me ask you this – If a team in the playoff has a star player injured, are they going to be removed from the playoff, and then we put Florida State back in? That to me was complete nonsensical rationalization," Drinkwitz said on SiriusXM College Sports Radio.

"And I know I’m an SEC guy, but that one bothered me a whole lot. And to then to not factor in maybe a team having an unfair advantage in some of their games. It just seemed like to me, we were picking and choosing what lens we were going to look through."

The Seminoles reacted harshly to the snub, with Norvell releasing a scathing statement on the CFP committee’s decision to leave them out.

"I am disgusted and infuriated with the committee’s decision today to have what was earned on the field taken away because a small group of people decided they knew better than the results of the game," Norvell said.

"What is the point of playing games? Do you tell players it is okay to quit if someone goes down? Do you not play a senior on Senior Day for fear of injury? Where is the motivation to schedule challenging non-conference games? We are not only an undefeated P5 conference champion, but we also played two P5 non-conference games away from home and won both of them.

"I don’t understand how we are supposed to think this is an acceptable way to evaluate a team."

Missouri will face Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.

15-year-old Florida student fatally struck by school bus while riding bike to school: police

A 15-year-old Florida student who was riding his bicycle to school was hit and killed by a school bus Tuesday, police said.

The deadly crash happened just before 7 a.m. near the intersection of West Pipkin Road and Medulla Road in Lakeland. Investigators believe a Schools of McKeel Academy bus was traveling west on West Pipkin Road approaching Medulla Road when, at the same time, the bicyclist was attempting to make a left turn northbound onto Medulla Road from the eastbound left turn lane when he was hit by the bus. 

The student crossed into the path of the school bus, police said in a press release. The boy, identified by the family as Jaxon Crabtree, according to FOX 13 Tampa Bay, was reported as unresponsive when authorities arrived at the scene. First responders tried to save him before he was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Crabtree attended Central Florida Aerospace Academy. A vigil was held for him Tuesday night, with his mother and father in attendance.

"I’ve seen him grow so much as a person and a friend, so it's really hard saying goodbye," Carter Catalano, a friend of Crabtree, said. "It's horrible to see something happen like this. He bikes home every day I see him. It’s so devastating. This community will be completely in shambles."

Eight passengers between the ages of 8 and 11 who attended the South McKeel Academy and McKeel Academy Central were on the bus at the time of the crash. They and the 71-year-old bus driver were not injured.

Lakeland Police Chief Sam Taylor told the media on Tuesday afternoon it did not appear the driver was speeding, and that she was "extremely upset" following the incident.

Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Frederick Heid said in a statement that the district has been in touch with Crabtree's family, and has made counselors available for students and staff at the school he attended. 

"We urge everyone in our community — all motorists and students — to take extra caution around schools and help save lives," the statement to FOX 13 reads.

In October, 17-year-old Sherman Vannoy was struck and killed by a school bus as he rode his bicycle near the entrance of Lake Minneola High School in Clermont, Florida.

Florida State AD rips CFP officials after being left out: 'The committee failed college football today'

Florida State athletics director Michael Alford ripped the College Football Playoff Committee on Sunday after the undefeated Seminoles were left out of the four-team field.

The Seminoles lost Jordan Travis a few weeks ago but still played well enough to defeat Louisville for the ACC Championship. CFP Selection Committee Chair Boo Corrigan said on ESPN that Florida State was a "different team" than they were through 11 weeks, suggesting the Travis injury was why officials decided against putting the team into the Playoff.

"The consequences of giving in to a narrative of the moment are destructive, far-reaching and permanent. Not just for Florida State, but college football as a whole," Alford said.

"The argument of whether a team is the 'most deserving OR best' is a false equivalence. It renders the season up to yesterday irrelevant and significantly damages the legitimacy of the College Football Playoff. The 2023 Florida State Seminoles are the epitome of a total TEAM. To eliminate them from a chance to compete for a national championship is an unwarranted injustice that shows complete disregard and disrespect for their performance and accomplishments. It is unforgievable (sic)."

Alford maintained that the team winning in spite of Travis’ injury should’ve "enhanced" their case to be in the Playoff instead of hindering it.

"Wins matter. Losses matter. Those that compete in the arena know this," he continued. "Those on the committee who also competed in the sport and should have known this have forgotten it. Today, they changed the way success is assessed in college football, from a tangible metric – winning on the field – to an intangible, subjective one. Evidently, predicting the future matters more.

"For many of us, today's decision by the committee has forever damaged the credibility of the institution that is the College Football Playoff. And, saddest of all, it was self-inflicted. They chose predictive competitiveness over proven performance; subjectivity over fact. They have become a committee of prognosticators. They have abandoned their responsibility by discarding their purpose – to evaluate performance on the field.

Florida State beat two ranked teams in the regular season and then topped Louisville for the conference title.

Alabama got into the playoff with an SEC Championship win over No. 1 Georgia. But the Crimson Tide lost to Texas earlier in the season. The Longhorns are ranked No. 3 in the Playoff.

Man dies in NYPD custody at Bronx hospital after headbutting first responder: police

A man died while in police custody Friday after he headbutted a paramedic in the head, the NYPD said. 

The deceased man, 49, was being aided by EMS who had been called to his home in the Bronx at around 10:20 a.m. after he was injured in a prior motor vehicle collision, according to the New York Daily News.

The man refused treatment and EMS workers struggled to load him into an ambulance to take him to hospital, police said.

3-YEAR-OLD KILLED IN HIT-AND-RUN JUST FEET FROM HIS HOME: POLICE

During the tussle, police said the man struck a 33-year-old first responder in the head with his own head.

EMS eventually transported the man to NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln on 149th Street where cops took him into custody as he received treatment.

He later died while receiving medical care from hospital staff, the NYPD told Fox News Digital.

An investigation is being carried out by the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division, a unit that studies the use of police force. 

The division investigates all cases where individuals die while in police custody, the NYPD told Fox News Digital.

The man lived in an apartment on Prospect Avenue in Mott Haven.

His identity has been withheld pending family notification.

NJ teen accused of filming customer in department store bathroom, police believe there are more victims

Police in New Jersey have arrested a teenager for invasion of privacy after he was allegedly caught filming a store customer in a public bathroom. 

Evesham Township Police officers were dispatched to a Burlington department store on South Route 73 on November 26 for a report of suspicious activity.

"The caller/victim reported that while using the public bathroom he observed a cell phone being held under the stall, recording him," police said on Facebook.

The victim notified store employees and police after he left the restroom.

David Reyes, 19, was arrested after police found him still in the bathroom, according to 6 ABC. 

Police noted on Facebook that probable cause determined that he was purposely recording the victim "using the bathroom, for his own sexual gratification."

Investigators believe that additional victims may be out there.

"His cell phone was recovered. Based on a preliminary investigation, we believe there are more victims," Evesham Township Police Chief Walt Miller told FOX 29 Philadelphia. "We are doing a search warrant now, so that’s why I want to get the information out into the public." 

Reyes has been released from jail, pending his first appearance in Burlington County Superior Court, Evesham Township Police said.
