US rescue teams to descend on hard-hit Caribbean after catastrophic Hurricane Melissa's impact

FIRST ON FOX: The State Department is deploying teams that are expected to arrive in the Caribbean as early as Thursday to support disaster response after Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica Tuesday.

The State Department announced it would deploy a regional disaster assistance response team (DART) and had activated U.S.-based urban search and rescue (USAR) teams to support response efforts in the region following Hurricane Melissa.

A senior State Department official told Fox News Digital Wednesday that these teams are expected to arrive in Jamaica Thursday since the airport hasn’t suffered too much damage, but plans are in place to coordinate with the Department of War for a potential airlift in case commercial operations are not available.

Likewise, the State Department also has requested the Department of War provide airlift support to provide food, water and other nutritional supplies to those in need throughout the island.

Another disaster assistance response team is expected to provide assistance to Haiti Thursday. The Bahamas also are expected to request a declaration of humanitarian need later Wednesday, which will allow the State Department to activate a disaster assistance response team there too, which could arrive as early as Friday, the official said.

Additionally, the State Department has signed off on nearly $1 million to go toward administering food and other resources, pulling from predesignated supplies housed in 12 different warehouses across the region. This includes six warehouses based in Haiti, one in the Dominican Republic, another in Barbados and one in Miami.

"We have stood up resources to assist our American citizens who are on the ground, in addition to deploying Disaster Assistance Response Teams who will help provide critical coordination in overseeing U.S. assistance," State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane — the highest level — and is the most powerful to strike Kingston since the island started tracking its storms 174 years ago.

Jamaica is reporting at least one death as a result of the storm, and significant damage to the island that has wiped out power for a majority of citizens. Roughly 77% of the island does not have power, Dana Morris Dixon, Jamaica’s education minister said Wednesday.

Additionally, more than 25,000 people in Jamaica have headed to shelters after the storm destroyed their homes.

"It’s not going to be an easy road, Jamaica," said Desmond McKenzie, deputy chairman of Jamaica’s Disaster Risk Management Council.

The hurricane is now on its way to Cuba as a Category 2 storm. Other Caribbean countries, including the Bahamas, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Turks and Caicos, also expect to experience fallout from the storm.

NFL fans upset as Eagles benefit from early whistle on tush push vs Giants

The Philadelphia Eagles took the lead in the second quarter against the New York Giants on Sunday following a controversial call on the notorious tush push play.

The Eagles had the ball on 4th-and-1 with Jalen Hurts under center. He had his teammates behind him to push him across the first down marker to keep the ball. As he was getting pushed forward, Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux ripped the ball out of Hurts’ hands.

It appeared the Giants were going to get the ball back. But as the team was celebrating, the officials on the field blew the play dead and gave Philadelphia the first down. Head referee Brad Rodgers explained afterward the officials ruled that Hurts’ forward progress was stopped.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll was irate on the sidelines.

Two plays later, Hurts tossed the ball to Saquon Barkley for a touchdown that helped Philadelphia go up 14-7. It was Barkley’s second touchdown of the game.

NFL fans, already fed up with the tush push and how it’s being officiated, were upset with the most recent incident.

In the last meeting between the two teams, the Eagles ran the tush push four straight times in one of their touchdown drives. New York ended up winning that game earlier this month.

NFL owners have been under pressure to ban the play. It survived a vote that would have prohibited the call during the offseason. It’s expected to be revisited next year.

Arnold Schwarzenegger dismisses Newsom argument that redistricting effort is temporary as 'total fantasy'

Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger dismissed current Gov. Gavin Newsom's argument that the proposed redistricting in the state was temporary, calling the notion "total fantasy."

"I think when he — when they say this is temporary, there is no such thing. I mean, the longest programs are government programs that are temporary. Okay, just remember that if this is a tax program or if it is the redistricting program, anything that is temporary with government is permanent," he told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union," responding to a clip of Newsom touting his Proposition 50 legislation that would reshape congressional seats.

Voting opened last week to add as many as five Democrat-held seats in Congress, which could possibly offset President Donald Trump’s moves in Texas and elsewhere to help Republicans in the 2026 election. Obama endorsed Prop 50 this week.

"In the year 2032 when the independent redistricting commission is supposed to come back, they‘re going to say, ‘Wait a minute. There‘s still gerrymandering going on in Texas. There‘s still gerrymandering going on in Ohio. There‘s still gerrymandering going on in Florida. We have to continue with gerrymandering.’ This is what‘s going to happen. They will find an excuse. So therefore I don‘t think it is temporary. So that‘s total fantasy," Schwarzenegger said.

REDISTRICTING BATTLE: NEWSOM VOWS TO FIGHT ‘FIRE WITH FIRE’

Newsom issued a response to those who oppose Proposition 50 and said, "Spare me the moral high ground."

Schwarzenegger called the redistricting efforts cheating, and said Democrats needed to outperform Trump.

"What the Democrats should do is they should outperform Trump. To me, it‘s all about competition creates performance. And so what they do is with the redistricting commission is that they‘re going to go and try to draw the district lines in such a way that they get voted in, no matter if they work well or not for the American people. So the American people get cheated on this whole thing. That is really the problem here," he said.

The former Republican California governor said that he understood Republicans and Democrats needed to "fight" about it, but argued that Americans were being cheated.

"I think that if you want to really fight for democracy, why would you go in, destroy the Constitution in California, tear it up and redo it, do the whole thing? So to me, it just doesn‘t make any sense at all," he added.

Schwarzenegger has come out against the redistricting efforts in a post on social media, where he posted a photo of himself at the gym wearing a t-shirt that read "terminate gerrymandering."

The former governor also told CNN that he and Newsom were friendly and spoke about the issue. Schwarzenegger said they've been speaking out about it without attacking one another.

John Fetterman breaks with Democrats in shutdown vote, says it’s an ‘easy choice’ to put America first

The government shutdown has stretched into one of the longest in U.S. history, with Democrats and Republicans deadlocked over healthcare funding.

Among the few lawmakers breaking ranks is Democratic Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa, who voted with Republicans to reopen the government. Now, he’s urging his colleagues to do the same.

"It’s an easy, easy choice to pick my country over the party, especially in circumstances like this," Fetterman said on "Saturday in America."

On Thursday, the Senate failed in a 54-46 vote to advance a Republican bill to pay certain federal workers during the shutdown, falling short of the 60 votes needed to pass the measure. Only three Democrats, including Fetterman, voted with Republicans.

GOVERNMENT LIMPS DEEPER INTO SHUTDOWN CRISIS WITH NO DEAL IN SIGHT

Democrats have refused to back any funding bill unless it includes an extension of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, which are set to expire in 2025. They argue that failing to act before open enrollment in November could drive up premiums for millions of Americans.

But Republicans say the government needs to reopen before they can negotiate.

"I do believe that there’s a critical mass of my fellow Democrats that are dug in until there’s an absolute ironclad kind of a deal," Fetterman said, explaining his party’s position.

But Fetterman said he believes Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., is an "honorable guy" and that talks on healthcare will move forward when the government is reopened.

"Let's just open it up," he said.

"Then we can have that conversation to see if we can extend those tax credit deals, because I do believe there are enough Republicans that would like to see that too."

The shutdown began Oct. 1, shuttering nonessential federal offices and delaying pay for hundreds of thousands of workers. As it entered its fourth week, many federal employees missed their first full paycheck.

The impact on the federal government’s nutrition program is a major issue for Fetterman and one reason he believes lawmakers need to set aside differences and focus on getting people fed.

He said that amid the standoff, neither political side is winning the battle. Instead, the entire country is losing.

"It’s like, ‘Are we winning? Are we losing?’" he said.

"Because I guarantee America is losing in this place right now."

Eight Americans arrested in Bahamas after authorities discover 'high-powered weapons' cache, ammunition

Eight Americans were arrested in the Caribbean on Tuesday after authorities found "high-powered weapons" and a "substantial quantity of ammunition" on their boat, police said.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) said in a news release that officers from the Alice Town Police Station worked with the Bahamas Customs Department to search a vessel docked at a port on Bimini, a chain of western islands some 50 miles east of Miami, Florida, on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. The officers were "acting on intelligence," the RBPF said, but they did not specify what information they had.

The 10 occupants aboard the boat, which included eight Americans, one South African and another from Guyana, were taken into custody, the RBPF said. Those who were arrested range in age from 21 to 62, police noted. The RBPF did not identify them.

Onboard, authorities found a trove of weapons, ammunition and cash.

Bernie Sanders slams Kamala Harris' 2024 campaign, says she failed to focus on important issues

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., called out Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign on a podcast Wednesday and said she failed to focus on issues that mattered to working Americans.

"Why is there such a cover-up with Biden’s mental decline? Why is there no primary, a quick one even, after he is judged unfit to run? Why is there no transparency there? That’s a huge problem, and I think it delivered — I mean, I know people blame five podcasters, but I think that process helped deliver the country," host Tim Dillon asked Sanders during "The Tim Dillon Show."

Sanders began by praising Harris and noting that he ran against her in 2020. He added that he had campaigned hard for her in 2024.

"I think the reason that she lost that election gets back to the point we discussed at the beginning of this podcast and that is money in politics. Kamala did not run a campaign focused on the needs of the working class, didn’t run a campaign focused on healthcare, on economics, and raising the minimum wage, on paid family and medical leave, on housing, on all of the issues that working people are struggling with right now," Sanders said.

"And I think her not focusing on those issues allowed Trump to win, in my view," he added.

Sanders previously criticized Harris’ campaign in an August interview on CNN, saying her consultants were "heavily influenced by wealthy people."

"I like her, she’s a friend of mine, but her core consultants, you know, were heavily influenced by very wealthy people. How do you run for president and not develop a strong agenda which speaks to the economic crises facing working families?" Sanders said.

"You know, more income and wealth inequality today than we’ve ever had. You have 60% of our people living paycheck to paycheck. How do you not talk about these issues?" Sanders continued.

Harris wrote in her book, "107 Days," that Sanders had urged her to focus on the working class when she took former President Joe Biden's spot at the top of the ticket.
